August Top Gear - Clio 197

They'll still be driving 10 year old cars and clinging on to there insecurities whilst the rest of us move on to the new kids on the block....in this case the 197 and then whatever comes after that.

nope. most will move on to real cars.

Toys out of the pram or what....!

Ho hum...anyhow....

"I don`t give a flying f**k about Renault Sport other than the fact i own a 182 which i purchased because at that time it was the best small hot hatch on the market and best value bar none. 2 years down the line it still is, and that still stands with the introduction of the 197."

What? You're obviously confused. The 182 is not "on the market"/available anymore nor is it still the best value for money because you cannot buy it anymore.....get it right next time...right now the 197 is the best hot hatch and value for money.....name me another one available now....

He doesn't give a f**k about Renault sport yet he's owned nearly every model since the Williams ended production.....strange for someone who doesn't give a f**k about Renault Sport. Contradictory anyone?

In a few months when the over inflated value of the 197 has collapsed I might consider getting one, but certainly at the moment on a price/performance ratio compared to the 182 it pales in comparison.

Should wait longer for the Cup or Trophy version. I am sure they will do somehting like that. Also, I recommend to buy a new model after it had launched for 1 year or so, so that they can have a beta version after some little faulty mistake.

There's loads of low millage 182's floating around, i'd say there's plenty of choice for anyone interested in one.

Are you guys really suggesting that the 182 is real world quicker than the 197?
Specs say they are the same and the same as my 172 CUP......its heavier but with an extra 17BHP which compensates for the added weight.

They are equal...lets not get carried away.

As for rpciing they are also identical. I remember when the 172/CUP.182/CUP/TROPHya ll were released they were in and around the £16K mark which is what you can expect to pay for the 197.

I'vce booked a test drive in the 197 and an F1 Megane on Friday although I doubt either will make me wnat ot trade the V6.....I may trade the Golf GTTDi 150 for a 197 for the wife......we'll have to wait and see.

no ones disputing facts and figures, more so that the car seems to lack the characteristics of a true hot hatch.

Also people payed more around the £13k figure for the Trophy.

Let us know what your test drive goes like, IMO I wouldn't trade the V6 for a 197... but saying that the golf for the 197 seems to be a more suited swop.

Are you on drugs or is making up stories just a habit ?

My 182 was the first Renault i EVER purchased so please explain that bo****s about owning nearly every model since the Williams. ??? R8TDL making things up again anyone ?????

Not confused at all, if (Yet again ) you read what i said properly i said 2 years ago the 182 was the best etc.... i never said its still the best "New car " available on the market, as has been pointed out there are still plenty out there.

Since when has the new 197 beeen the best value at the price it costs without many standard features ??? According to you its the best value >>> WTF !!!

I`m also still waiting for you to explain exactly how i will end up with a 197 as you have said i will, despite not liking them enough to buy ???

i think your a bit sad Funkyjahooner ranting on about what you own, what house you have etc.

Who gives a f**k. this has nothing to do with the 197. stick to the topic.

I think you are even sadder if this is your contribution to the thread, whats that got to do with the 197 ?? My comments were to do with a bet he offered.

I wasn`t ranting about what i own or boasting, he wanted a bet that i`d end up with a car that i don`t even like so i offered everything i own, and more as my part of the bet. It was a bit of sarcasm aimed at a guy who seems to think i will spend over 15K on a car that i don`t even like, and will trade in a car that i love to get one. There were plenty of other things in my offer i didn`t put a price on which i could of, but i didn`t because i was only making a point. Nice of you to pick up on the only thing i mentioned with a price. You must have too much time on your hands.

Who gives a toss what i own anyway ??? Certainly not me, owning a Clio is not really a car for braggers is it ?? If i wanted to show off i`d buy something else belive me. If i cared about material things i wouldn`t` offer them up for a bet, unless it was the worlds worst stupid no loose bet which that would be.

Your comments have f**k all to do with the 197, try submitting something that even resembles some form of discussion to the subject instead of picking fault with someone who can be at least arsed contributing to the subject matter directly or comments made directly as a result of responding to the discussion.

The 197 is a sporty car, more comfortable and refined than the mk II's, but the comfort and safety gain comes at a price, you lose some (not all) of the mk II fun. It moves even further away from hot hatches of old and blurs class lines. Good or bad, you choose: There are plenty of 182's to buy, so it's up to you.

I personally won't be buying one any time soon, cup might be more interesting, but I doubt we'll be going for one of those, as the 250 Meggy will be around by then. This would only be if the other half's mk II Golf GTI gives up the ghost. If we both get a huge pay rise, we'd go for an RS4 of some nature (prolly a coupe, but the avant might be a giggle.)

You may have seen my full "review" on another thread. It's different, but not for me at the moment. If you're seriously looking at a 197, take a look at the 225, ST and VXR as well, mebbe the Golf if you have a couple more quid to spare.

i disagree that it is less fun than the 182.

I think it takes a lot of the issues the 182 had and gets rid of them. ie, the poor brakes, gearchange and seating position. it is overall a lot more refined but can still be loads of fun when you push it.

If you don't want that then stay with your 182.

it fits the bill superbly for me so i will probably be making a purchase in a few months.

Obviously it isn't to everyones tastes or wants but for me it is miles ahead of the 182 i currently own. :)

(this is all my opinion and people can disagree with me. I am not saying this is the opinion you must have either. each to their own!!! just buy the car you like and thrash it!! :) :) )

I dont agree the brakes are poor. Any car that can rival supercars for 100-0 stopping power (i.e. 172 + 182) cant be that bad. I've never had them fade either.

Every car I've ever had, on the owners club forums they ALWAYS say the brakes are poor. I just dont get this. Maybe if I had driven a Ferrari then the brakes might feel poor, but compared to any other car of remotely similar performance, there is NOTHING poor about the brakes. Just because it doesnt have 4-pot brakes and discs the size of dinner trays doesnt mean to say they are poor. The 197 NEEDS brakes that big just to stop as well as a 182 due to the extra lard.

Oh and as for the 197, i'm sure its ok. I dont like the look, and its too big and heavy and probably too refined for my tastes. If I want that, I'll buy a BMW thanks. I'm done with hot hatches after the 182. They just dont appeal any more. After having the mk2 golf, i'm not really convinced any progress has been made in the areas that matter - fun. The mk2 was just as much fun and that only had 110 bhp. Sure, the Clio is much faster and with more grip, but not really more fun - but not less either however a lot of modern cars i've been in leave me cold.

maybe i was a bit harsh re the poor brakes but the 197 has quite amazing anchors imo.

its a case of what each individual likes. for me the 197 is a beter car than the 182.

for others the 182 is better or the valver/williams is better than all of them.

it all comes down to personal preference :)

True... and i'm sure with its 4 pots the 197 does have very good brakes.

However, drive a Fabia vRS on its standard brakes with a remap, and you will see what poor brakes really means ;)

The 182 is still on the market. There is a very good second hand market where you can choose many good 182s. The 197 has not been proven to be the best hot hatch. When a review comes out directly comparing it to the 182 and betters it then you can say that, until then put your sensationalist claims back in box.
