auto lights

what parameters do the sensors use? The local shell garage i get my Optimax from, is quite exposed, yet the lights come on. But if i drive on a road made dark from overhanging trees, the lights dont come on. Under a small tunnel by my parents the lights will come on. There doesnt seem to be a pattern to them operating when you hit dark zones and not so dark zones during the daytime. Any ideas what the sensors are measuring (light obviously, but over what period, distance, etc)

thx,

g

Hmmmm well, mate, theres one difference, your eyes con compensate for light level differences, but the cars sensor for the auto lights cant, so as it goes a bit darker you iris opens to get more light in, keeping the light levels the same to you, but to a sensor its gone quite a bit darker..... also the lights have got a delayed reaction on them, so maybe thats what is making them not come on on the road with the trees?

roamer, ok, i get that but...

the Shell station (which, incidentally, is vastly superior and sells the most excellent Optimax as used by Ferrari) isnt very dark at all, but the road with trees is very dark (and long), the tunnel is quite short and has a darkness level in between the superb Shell garage and the tree road.

Or maybe that is what youre saying.

Mine always come on in a multi storey car park, I get some helpful people pointing this out to me!! It is a delayed reaction as Roamer said, both switching on and off...as I pull out of the car park in to bright sunshine they stay on for a few mins, again, thankyou helpful people for pointing this out!!!

As for knowing about the trees, maybe they are more intelligent than we thought!! ;)

Its like the wipers; they take on a life of their own!!!! Some times they dont work very well, other times they work far to well!! Best one was when they stopped when I stopped at junctions and started again when I moved.....never happened before or since

Its supposed to stop when you stop, or to be more precise, if its wiping on full it will go down to intermittent, or if its on intermittent it will slow down.

RTFM (read the f**king manual) ;)

as to why it doesnt happen everytime I dunno

I had to disable the auto headlights not long after getting the car. Driving into the centre of Birmingham with my lights coming on and off everytime I drove under an underpass was going to get me beaten up or shot

On the normal wipe or fast wipe I think they always stop when I stop my car in traffic? On auto they just do what they feel like

Yes I have RTFM in Dutch and in English, thank you very much ;)

Still doesnt explain why it only happened once though......
