What are you trying to do?
From my experience, you buy individual map images, depending on the location and scale you need. You might be able to do bulk/subscription purchase.

depends if you want a map you can edit (DWG) or jsut a tiff/jpeg OS map.

I bought about 1km of cad (DWG format) data earlier off Centremaps Live and it cost (the client...) about £200. You can get just OS maps (jpeg etc) for a lot cheaper.

Oh and if you want just OS maps in Jpeg, i'd just screen grab off Bing and stitch them together....

edit: was a bigger area than i thought!

Christ a DWG format map from centremaps for Essex comes in at about £32,355... I think you'll struggle to get a map thats edit-able/DWG format for cheap tbh and it'll be a massive file!

edit: unless you know a student who can register to use Digimap then you can get maps which have to be processed for them to work in CAD for free although not sure if there's a limit to the area/amount they can download and they'll still be a huge file!

Yeah that's for a DWG file (so CAD editable). the Tiff OS map for the same area is about £500. Centremaps is what we use at work, seems to offer the greatest range of data.

It depends on the area you need really, i can get my street (200sqm) CAD data for £13 or jsut the Tiff OS map for £5. Whether you local authority would be able to provide any mapping data I don't know..

Whole of Essex, lol! You'd need a super computer to open it dude!

Just buy it as you need it, small areas, I.e a house and surrounding roads normally cost about £50 in autocad format. There's a range of websites to buy it from, some are cheaper than others, but it depends if you need topo data etc.

I wouldn't recommend it...! LOL! My previous job involved a significant amount of tactical planning, GIS / map data processing, etc. and I'm aware of many cases where businesses have been fined (and people sacked) for screen grabbing from Bing/Google etc. and pasting them together. Not having a dig, just making sure folks are aware of the implications and the fact that it is severely frowned upon.

We don't use them at work, we use centremaps (as we're not paying for them lol) but if he just wants parts of Essex for personal use then it'd be fine.. less so for commercial use
