Autodesk Inventor Users

Yeah i'm just a standard CAD user... I'm in civils (Water and Utilites) don't have a massive need for mechanical stuff at the moment. Just decided to download inventor though to see what its like... I would like to do more 3D stuff though. I've done a bit with Civil 3D.

I fancied getting into Inventor and we almost made this step at our place.
We have just decided on Graitec's Advance Steel which is a bolt on for AutoCAD 2011.
3d modelling, structural package that handles stairs and handrails quite well, which is something we specialise in.
Automatic joint creation, fittings, cutting lists, load lists etc etc.
I'll be doing the training course to get the hang of it later this year, early next.
Inventor is more biased towards the mechanics and moving component engineering is it not?

We looked at the Graitec solution, if you have a lot of repeatability in your design details then it looks to work well, however it's very rare for us to have two projects that have common details.
The company I work for design and manufacture aluminium structures. We also have a standard range of trussing components. We'd like to update these into Inventor and hopefully be able to have some kind of linked automated BOM creation.
Below is a typical truss section:
I presume that the main Aluminium frame would be drawn in one part file then the male and female connectors in two more part files and the 3 then combined into an assembly file which I can then create drawing files from? Is that correct?
After this how would I go about creating the BOM to list each section size, length and and any machining details? Would this update automatically if I change either the part or assembly files?

I personally wouldnt do it that way (although that is probably down to limited experience).
I would model all the bars etc individually and then assemble them, then assemble the connectors onto it.
THEN the BOM should automatically update.
However, I have had little experience with the BOM tool.
