Aux belt, is it 3 or 5 years?

Seams to be mixed opinions on this.

My service book says it's 5 years or 36k.

But quite a few people reckons it's 3 years.

Well i'm on 18k and 3.5 years so i'm gonna follow Renaults guidlines as per my cars manual.

So far to me 3yrs just seams to be CS recomendation.

My old boy had his done at three years too (by renault) his mileage was no where near 36k back then (ages ago) so it wasn't the mileage factor.

Surely, if you hold on till 5 years and it breaks in year 4, then you can produce the manual to Renault and say they are at fault for telling you 5 years. They then replace all damaged parts FOC and you've saved £200.

Thats what i'd be inclined to do.

My service book for my 182 says the same 5 years or 36k . I'd like to see proof also if the schedule has changed . Unless it's just a case of chinese whispers and people assuming that 36k equates to 3 years with an average of 12k a year .

that's a tough one. Depends if you plan to keep it more than 18 months. I would have personally recommended it be done at the 3rd annual service, but that's very low mileage.

If it is five years why did renault tell my old man that his was due at three years ?? Like I said the car was nowhere near 36k.

I've always thought it to be three years anyway.

^^^ Could be cos some of the dealership's don't know the service intervals themselves . I had this when i went to book in my 172 for it's first service . They told me it wasn't due until 18k , i told them to check again as it was due at 12k , they appoligised and agreed it was 12k .

In Australia the Aux belt is listed in the warranty / service manual as 3yrs / 50000km and the timing belt as 4yrs / 100000km. The dealers also say you are not supposed to reuse the aux belt- so it needs to be replaced again when removed to do the timing belt at 4yrs :S .

They also recommend replacing the tensioner when doing the aux belt..... I had mine done "early" at 30months/ 14000km and they replaced the tensioner under warranty because it was noisy. (I figured I might as well get it done early if it needs doing again with the timing belt at 4yrs.)

I can scan the above and post it if nobody believes it.

I'm sure mine says 36K, but it probably is 5 years. Saying that, renault suggest 72K for cambelt change. I spoke to andy at GDI the other day as i'm having a 48K service today and he said that cambelt should be changed earlier as they have a problem with braking. You would be gutted if the aux belt went and damaged the cambelt also in the process.
