Aux belt, is it 3 or 5 years?

  182 FF Inferno
Guy over on Renaultsport.co.uk has just paid £700 for a 36k service/ aux belt (had rear pads/ discs too)

Sorry, but that takes p**s. Since when did Renault put themselves up alongside BMW/ Mercedes in servicing costs?

With Renault the 36k including aux belt is around £600 so I'd say it hasn't been done.

Not for my car?
36k and Aux belt (all stated on the receipt I have) including fully synthetic oil, was either £350 or £450.

I would get it done at 36k, for the sake of a few hundred quid why risk it. And a few hundred isn't pocket change, but you know these cars are costly to run, it's part and parcel of buying the car.

What garage did you get it done at mate?

Kayzee, not sure without looking at the papers, previous owner had it done before I picked the car up, if you pm me tomorrow I'll dig it out and have a look, somewhere near Mansfield though as thats where i bought the car.

just had a quick read of this, if an aux belt goes it normally takes the engine anyone who leaves it runs that risk.

I want proof, who says it's 3 years, where did this come from?

Think of it like this. Renault made a Clio 182 (no options), a 182 with Cup packs, and a 182 Cup. Now on CS a 182 is a ff :S, 182 with cup packs is also a ff:S, and then a 182 Cup. ;)

So in conclusion no one has any proof about it saying 3 years?

Here you go - http://www.renault.com.au/docs/services/Internetinfoservice-PASS-Oct04.pdf - the Renault Australia servicing / warranty handbook.

Go to page 15 and it says:

(every) 100000km or 4 Years - Renew Timing Belt
.
.
.
(every) 50000km or 3 Years - Renew Accessories Belt - Clio 2l 16V Renault Sport (RS), only

It also says down the bottom of the same page:

Renault recommends that whenever replacing the Timing Belt, the Accessory Belt should also be replaced .

DrRollo, Please dont take this the wrong way. But its been seen numerous times before on here and renaultsport that peoples belts are snapping and failing PRIOR to the 5yrs some even 3yrs. Regardless of what renault put on paper, the failures are occuring and at great cost to those individuals. I understand its money that you dont want to pay, and by having something in writing it will put your mind at rest somewhat, but its still going to be a risk regardless of what renault state what/when is due.

Your at 3yrs and at 18k miles. You probably dont need it to be done quite so early, but the key word here is probably. Its not just engine milage that affects the belts its just general weather and use etc.. so the risk is still present regardless of your lovely low milage example.

For peace of mind, I PERSONALLY would get it done when funds allow, as its be proven again that renault will not incur any cost if the belt does snap. If money is tight, which to be fair even if it isnt, its still an awful lot of money to spend just on changing a belt.

With your track days etc that you have done or do, i would sway more towards getting it done just to feel 100% confident in my/your car.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

Here in Holland my Reno Specialist showed me his manual where they recommend the TIMING belt every FOUR years now , still 125000 km though..

BenR, would you reccomend changing the tensioner/ idler/ pulleys when doing the aux belt? I'm going to approach a local garage during the week and see what they quote and whether they'd be happy doing it. Also what sort of time would it take? (would bring it to you, but I really am miles from you!!)

I'd change them if they were worn/broken/seized, but thats about the only reason.

It can be a right b*****d for people not used to the job.

I'm really wanting to know why my engine is still making the exact same whining noise when on cold start AFTER my timing + AUX belt were done

Could this mean that they only did the aux belt and not the idler/tensioner/pulleys-etc. with it ?? (i only have the timingbelt kit on my receipt, raises questionmarks here!!)

Should i , when still having the whining noise , go back and have these pulleys etc. done !?
