bad tapping noise from the engine

well basically car started tapping a few weeks back nothing to major so had a check plenty of oil in it just put it down to tappits on the way out, but now it seems to have gotten allot worse, ive been told when the defazer pulley is on the way out it starts to tap quite bad, does this sound about right could anyone shed some light for me as i have no clue about engines and this lol cheers.

sounds highly possible it's the dephaser pulley. Have you recently had the belts changed?

As above. If you rev it lightly to around 2k does the tapping/grinding stop or does it get louder/faster?

the pulleys do continue to deteriorate. basically if the pulley isn't sitting in the right place (which it's not if it's internals have gone slack) then your cam timing is just random between 2 points.

it will never fall off. It can't, but you will find the car becoming more dificult to drive with some funny flat spots at light throttle/low revs sometimes

From what you have said it sounds like it definatly the defazor pulley is that a problem you can live with it slipping or is a oh f**k change it now problem! Lol Sorry if these are stupid questions but I know sweet F.A about engines lol

Live with it, but you may find loss of power occasionally when it gets worse.

dont live with it ,lol. my 172 sounds like the big ends are hanging off and all it is is the dephaser. get it done!

haha yeh think i will look into getting it sorted want to put it for sale soon so wont it sounding sweet when itsfor sale lol is it a big job kam belt has to come off doesnt it?

yes cambelt and dephaser replaced if youre going to sell it. if youre keeping it then tensioners and idlers replaced too unless done recently. either way biggish labour bill!

I wouldn't say live with it!!! but i wouldn't panic that it's going to go boom. It needs changing as soon as you can reasonably do it, ie a few weeks wont hurt.

It's always a cambelt replacement job. TBH though a recent cambelt replcament from a known specialist will help a lot with the sale

i had all the belts changed at NW performence about 6 months ago so would it just be worth getting the dephaser belt and tensioners

you shouldnt retension a timing belt, it will shorten its life , replace it its not worth the risk.
