Ball joints

  330i. E30 Touring.
Not rocket science.

Two bolts holding them onto the wishbone, and a pinch bolt on the underside of the hub.

Getting hold of just the ball joints is probably the trickiest bit, as they normally come complete with the wishbone. IIRC, people use Meg ones, as you can buy them separately.

Oh, and a ball joint splitter is invaluable with removing the old ones!

undo the two bolts on the wish bone...

undo the pinch bolt (you may need to remove the caliper depending which way the bolt has been fitted to pull it out)...

pull the balljoint down, reach for a hammer...

Bang...

Bang...

Ball joint drops out...

Fit new one in reverse, without any hammer action ;)

Just remember to lube up the new item

Use a fork-type ball-joint splitter and it's easy. I did mine when I was changing my discs and it took about 30 mins tops to do the lower ball joints.

It's a megane coupe 2.0 16v 95-03 ball joint you need for the 172's - available from RUK/ GSF/ ECP.

You can buy Motaquip ones from eBay for next to nothing and they are PSA OE Equipment.

Wasnt the case with my ph1 172, i simply went to Europart.com and got one brand new for about £10 iirc.....

Fitting it wasnt too difficult, im not familiar with the terminology of the parts, but i took the disc, and caliper off, and then the ball joint, the only problem i had was getting the drive shaft back in place, took about 2 hours, not too hard, and im no expert with cars either.

Best of luck mate

Give these guys a call, they dont display the part on their website, but i called them, and they had the part there, or can order it in, it was something like £9.80 +vat.... think a local garage were asking for £35+VAT to do the whole job including the part. Up to you if you think you can be bothered to do it, for £40quid id jst pay a garage to do it, but as stated previously, im not grease monkey!

can be easy apparently but... if the pinch bolt is seized and the ball joint is seized it can be a bit tricky as i have found out.

I think nw performance do them separate from the wishbones.

Very easy to change, I also used a fork type balljoint remover. :)

offtopic: are the cup pack 182 ball joints different from the 172 ones? larger bolt holes if I can recall?

Nope.

You're thinking of the bolt spacing, probably.

Ball joints I imagine will be identical.

Yes the bolt spacing I know it's 4 mm extra on the cupped 182's but I've read something around here regarding the ball joints and couldn't remember exactly what

  Clio 182 Trophy. No. 189
Did mine the other week and the pinch bolts were MEGA tight, took rather a lot of hammering to knock out!

Car seems to have stopped making the weird loss of grip when slow sharp turning so a mega result?!

I got a pair delivered for about £20, nice and cheap and very easy to change.

Car did need tracking afterwards though so might be worth gettting it checked!

They charged me tracking when i had mine done.

Thought they might have ripped me off if tracking didnt need doing.

Yeah there's no difference.

I didn't have any other work done (track rod ends), I replaced the ball joints myself ;)

Cheers for the advice, easy job bar the bolts (every one!) being rusted/seized badly!
