Bathurst

For members information - if you get the chance to go to Sydney in Australia its worth hiring a decent [quick] car and driving 2 and a half hours to Bathurst, where you can drive the famous Mount Panorama Circuit for free.

Its a public road. The Circuit is as you see it on TV. Gravel traps, chicanes, concrete wall, grid markings, pit garages etc. You can drive around either way and if you go on a week day its very quiet. The speed limit is 60kph but I defy anyone to stick to that, especially down Conrod Straight where we managed 200kph in a Hyundai Santa Fe. We didnt see one police car.

There is also a small racing car museum which is well worth a visit.

Albert Park in Melbourne is the same (public roads). Ive been round there, posed for pics outside the pits, usual tourist stuff. Very strange because the only other times Id had seen it was on the TV with F1 cars wizzing around it, and there I was with just the odd road car, couple of cyclist and someone walking a dog!

The Adelaide street curcuit is the same and surfers paradise. Adelaide still hosts a round of the V8 supercars. The sound is tremendous. Was there for 14 mins an32secs of F1 in 1990. Bathurst is shown live here for six or seven hours. Marvellous.

Street curcuit racing is excellent. Why did they ever stop the Birmingham superprix?
