battery or altinator? help pls

  clio mk1
hi all, yesterday got my clio mk1 and its a smooth drive pretty pleased with it except when i tried to start it up it wouldnt start it wasnt even turning the starter motor,ok so i pushed it off and it was running fine although the headlights where dim, then i parked it up and again it wouldnt start again so bassicly im wondering if there is a way i can test if its the battery or the altinator before i go and buy a non refundable battery... any advice would be massively appreciated, cheers guys

If i was you mate, id check to see if the alternator belt is still on the car. it doesn't sound like you have any charge in your battery. The belt snapped on mine before but where i had my music on i didnt notice until the lights started dimming. If not it may be the actual alternator that has packed up. Im pretty sure you can get this checked free of charge in halfrauds, but get some1 that doesnt look like he's just come out of school to test it for you.

i wudnt know where the altinator belt is mate, ill try looking though, also i cant really get the credit to halfords in its current state, i mite get my mate to give me a lift with the battery though and test that, i have heard if the battery is faulty this could make the headlights dim too but i dont know cheers for urn advice guys
