bending metal..

Car  golf
i need to make a 90degree bend in 5-10mm still rod, for my exhaust mount, whats the best way of doing so?

might stick it in a vise and tw@T it with a hammer but that might just snap it?

cheers

Heat it first where you want it to bend - this softens the metal and will allow it to stretch, rather than shatter or fracture.

Blow torch or similar will suffice.

Then tw@t it with a hammer.

good lad!

Heat to cherry colour and allow to cool on its own. drenching in water will cause it to become brittle.

Look at me the scientist lol

You dont have to be 18 to buy blowtorches do you? will a lighter work instead? Lol

so heat to cherry red, bend with pliers and let cool naturally?

cheers

not sure about age restrictions.

I doubt whether pliers will be strong enough, a hammer will probably be needed depending on thickness.

You need real heat, a lighter wont give you that.

thats what you want, but easier to buy one from shop rather than wait for flea-bay delays

where abouts in hants are you?

I have one that could be loaned......

can't you go to a plumb center and get a plumbers blowtorch.

they tend not to give a f**k who they sell s**t to.

Do you not have a local back street garage ?? If you do give them a bit of cash (a tenner should do it) and ask them to do it for you, they might even fit it for you too.

Need help bending metal, ask this guy

go to a car garage or metal fabricator and they should have whats known as a hot spanner,it'll take about 2mins to heat up and bend a piece of metal that thin...wont cost much either.

ok update , those blowtorches are s**t, 2 of them broke, one the muzzel melted off and the second the thread from the bottle and the head melted and broke
