Bent the flamer!

Car slipped off the handbrake on Friday outside my GF's house, and rolled down the hill into a flat bed truck..

Check out the results:

Taken it to mate yesterday who thinks he can beat out the rear 1/4, which is a relief.. Just need to find a bootlid now.. See my other Flamer identification thread!

You're right Iain - could have been a lot worse! Luckily it's only bent one quarter, and as the impact was quite high I think the boot floor isn't damaged and there's no damage to the chassis. Bumper seems to be fine too.

I'd be worried about the job done if he plans on repairing that part of the quarter.

The access to that part is terrible. It's not a part i'd entertain repairing.

So you think I'd be better off with a new quarter? What sort of price would you be talking for that sort or repair (just ballpark figure)..

I can understand that as a private repair you might try and repair it but jeez that won't be pretty, even to get the shape back in that tail lamp panel will be a mare not to mention the kink on the quarter.

After looking at the pics that ain't gona happen to any level of decent standard mate where it's been hit is just not repairable to any decent standard.

£800+ Off the top of my head.

Easily £800.

Remove all the rear quarter mouldings and glass (glass specialist charge), cut off the quarter, align and weld into position a new rear quarter, align and fit new tailgate, beat out and reshape O/s/r lamp panel, then paint the tailgate, paint the inner lamp panel, paint the quarter and blend the O/s door so the door needs dismantling.

Then there are the parts....

Even get a second tailgate and get a new quarter fitted, nobody like invasive surgery like that on a car but it's just where it's been hit. Unlucky is the word.

I know insurance is the last resort but sometimes it's needed.

if you find a real good tinsmith, that quarter would repair near perfect, just a small amount of filler. trouble is finding one, bodyshops are trained to replace panels and repaint, not repair most of the time.

wouldnt be a quick job to repair, but cheaper than 800 or so.

might be an idea to ask around for dent repair, the likes of chips away etc wouldnt do it, or any local sheet metal workshops, the sort that hand fabricate panels.

Good point about the tin smith, I would also say, highly equiped garages will have very good pulling tools to bring that back out but I would know until I seen it in person and it's finding a decent garage these days.

Its something we would be able to do for sure but the labour and time involved would usually outstrip the cost of putting in a new quarter.

Definitely needs jacking out and then alot of tender loving panel beating.

What kind of labour rate are you working with Ollie?

Our rate per hour is £38 on most makes.

It goes up for the likes of Lotus and Aston accordingly.

To pull out and make GOOD a repair like that i.e not have a panel full of filler that will no doubt bridge in a year or so, you'd end up with so much panel work that it would make more sense to bung a quarter in it.

Yeah I like repair versus replace but in the case of cheaper cars it's not worth the hassle for making an extra hours labour.

I've had one guy reckon he can get it out without a new quarter, I've seen his previous work on a friends Merc and it was spot on.

Off to see another friend of a friend today who usually works on more exotic cars so will be interesting to get his opinion too.. Will let you know what he thinks.

Bridging is what occurs when there is such a build up of materials i.e filler, basecoat, lacquer, that its starts to crack.

Usually what happens on poorly repaired (filled with filler) panels.

Decent panel beater should be able to get that pretty straight, i had pretty bad damage to my rear quarter and i opted for repair over replacement.

Trouble is with a new rear quarter you need to make sure its properly rust proofed after....

Shouldn't be an issue at all. Any new panel should be treated with Waxoyl as par for the course.
