I was just about to say this!
it may sound silly op but i took my girlfriends exhaust off of her peugeot 206 one time and it sounded awesome!
i didnt just randomly remove it, it snapped at the cat so needed replacing lol.

jam a plastic bottle in the arch so it rubs on the tyre?
Either would be lead to a less irritating noise than a de-zaust'd Clio.
OP, you could get a CD of engine noises?
When the backbox died on my 172 it was just plain embarassing, how people could consider free-flow-exhaust racket to be good is completely beyond me.
It got replaced with another OEM box

When the cat-manifold fixings went on the 182 it sounded epic! I just had to launch it up the main road to listen to it
