BIG problem with New Clio...Stolen?

  Breaking A 172 Replica
Hello guys,

As some of you may know on the 5/03/07 I bought myself a new clio. I posted the eBay link and despite it being Cat C, I went to have a look and got an excellent price.

However...

The car came with a private number plate (J77 HER). The seller stated that this was not included in the sale and he needed a copy of the log book, MOT and Tax disc to send to the DVLA so they can transfer the plates back over to the original (YK03 XLN). It has taken us some time to get them all the stuff photocopied and I have been waiting to meet up when he eventually found the locking wheel nut. I gave up with that though and sent off all the documents (only photocopies).

Now in between buying the car and now I have been pulled by the police for the plates (as they look bit like 11 as opposed to 77) however they ran a check and all seems well. I also got a warning sticker posted on the windscreen by the police as my tax disc wasn't on display (forgot to put it back in the car after photocopying it).

Now this afternoon I have had a call from the seller saying I need to meet him on 04/04/07 at the DVLA centre in Sheffield so the DVLA can match up the VIN numbers to "check" it hasn't been stolen. Wtf?

I am now feeling VERY worried and just want to get it all sorted.

Can anyone shed any light as to why they want to check it all out?

Thanks for your help guys

Sam

The thing is the DVLA are only saying this because they think the car has been ringed (number plates switched with another car which is the same model and colour)

How can I check this?

Sam

might be ok as the seller is trying to proove the cat c car is not another car with the details moved across .

ie swapping vin numbers to a stolen car , ringing the car in a way .
if dvla can be shown the car in its true form with original vin plates , theres nowt to be worried about .... ;)

Right ok.

The seller has offered me my money back if it does turn out to have been stolen - but I am not sure how legit he is after speaking to him post-sale. Might deal in a bit more than cars...

I will go and check the VINs.

And they the only two on the car then? If they are it should be ok as the car was hit from the nearside rear arch...

Sam

yes normally one inside the engine bay and the other in the car .if they've been removed and replaced it's not gunna look good tbh

It seems legit, at least if your both at the DVLA and theres a porblem, you can sort it out there and then

He prolly just wants his plate back, and he can assign it to his new car at the DVLA office there and then

Nope because he told me it was Cat C.

I know I was the biggest prick ever :(

Sam
Tbh i'd have still had one done as an hpi tells you if it still has outstanding finance on it too, plus if it's stolen etc.
Also cat c is quite bad - you sure you want it ??

dont worry mate, a randomly selected number of vehicles are checked prior to the transfer of reg's.

Seems this is just one of those.

Cheers for your replies guys.

Much appreciated.

Spoke to BrianR on the phone and he was helpful and knowledgeable as always :)

I am struggling to find the VIN numbers however...I can only find the visible one (the one on the dash). I understand there are three more on the bulkhead, engine strut and under the carpet on either the offside front or nearside front? But I cannot seem to see them at all :S:S:S

I was aware it was a Cat C and I checked the car over with this in mind. The price, IMO, accounted for this and some...

As said, thanks for your help :)

If the dvla wanted to check it, wouldnt they contact you?

I wouldnt go and meet the seller again just at his request, if they think its a ringer id wait for the police or dvla to contact you mate.

Sounds a bit sus him asking this of you.

Hmm I did think this and I am 95% sure he does do a few dealings that aren't 100% legal ;)

But then I thought what can he do at an official place like the DVLA office?

I will give the DVLA a call tomorrow just to check they have asked for the car to be called in however.

Just picked up that VIN number cheers Matt :)

Those two match but are there not more?

What I think DVLA are concerned about though is that the number plates have been nicked off another car of the same age and model and simply put onto this one. Is there anyway we can check to see if the VIN numbers I have on the car correspond with those registered on the number plates?

Thanks for the HPI check btw Taylor :)

Either way, if they wanted the car called in that badly they'd do something about it mate.

You're in charge here, not the seller, dont go anywhere at someone elses say so, its an un-needed risk.

confessions of love now eh lol

basicly the guy needs you there to sign the paperwork to have the plate transfered

Hmmmmm hadn't though about it like that.

That would explain why he has been soo unwilling to send the paperwork through the post and thats why he won't send me the locking nut...

But why would he make it 9days away if this was the case :s?
