Big Steve’s Clio 200 Raider

Yeah I can see what swayed you to the M2 😉

Funny how Renault sold Raider no1 recently, I also saw the ad and hummed and hawed, but couldn’t justify the price it was up for.

You still got yours??
Yeah still got it, just sat in the garage now, I’ll never sell it, just nice to have for the nice days I will pass it on to my son when he’s old/responsible enough 😂

It was a little on the expensive side but the low miles and low number would of made up for that in the long run

So I’ve noticed a few times when I’m driving the car hard, I can’t shift into 4th at high rpm.. I have to let the engine speed die down before it will then engage.

I’m not getting any crunching, but somethings not right… so I suspect it could be the Synchromesh’s in the gearbox, clutch drag, or a combination of both.

It bugs me not being right, so I set to it on Saturday with a view to getting it in a position so I can get the Gearbox out.

Few hours on Saturday, Sunday, and a couple on Monday evening and the car now sits on my drive with both subframes off, ready to whip the engine and box out when I can press-gang my best man into a days Labour to pull it out:

Was actually an ok job in the end.. was sweating it a bit, but just taking my time and being methodical, it all made sense.

Going to give the Ball Joints, Clutch and some other things a birthday whilst it’s apart.

If you had 45k (all your money in the world) you would probably be a bit upset.

Lots of dollars. Care.

Took a ride over to see Scoff at EFI Parts at the weekend so he could have a look over the mapping on the Clio Raider. My wife has been bending my ear for some time, that she won’t drive the car because of its tendency to Kangaroo when cold.
Thought I could kill two birds with one stone (pardon the analogy) and get the car mapped also, to check things were running well since I refreshed it all.

First run on the rollers and it produced 186.4bhp, then following a good hour of tweaking, and several runs later, Chris had corralled all of the stray horses back into the engine and she showed a bone stock 197bhp:

You can see on the AFR trace comparison here how things have been smoothed out no end:

Car drives a lot nicer now, and the ubiquitous Chav in a SEAT (do they drive anything else??) got shown up when I arrived applied my efforts on the drive home….. 😉

Clio Raider wheels all freshly refurbished by City Wheel Refurbishment, and now looking resplendent:

Next job was the interior, there was LOADS of detritus on the carpet that the vacuum nozzle couldn’t reach, so really got stuck into it this weekend:

Took the Clio Raider to my now favoured detailing guy near Cambridge (Optimum Detail) for him to apply ceramic coat the car, ready for our Euro Jolly coming up later this month.

Collected it today, and as usual it looked amazing:

It had a full decontamination wash and clay (yes I was also surprised to learn that you could clay a matte car!??) before it got coated in Gyeon Q2 Matte Evo ceramic coating:

Then all of the contrasting gloss black parts (bumpers, roof, wing mirrors) got polished out also:

Circuit Days Nurburgring Nordschleife Trackday yesterday and the Raider loved it, but of course, being a Renault, not everything was plain sailing…

Drove there and the Aux Belt tensioner started squealing like a 🐷, so gave it a little WD40 spray, and it shut up, but I wasn’t confident in it, so I ordered a new kit from the Renault Dealer in Adenau, and managed to find somewhere with a ramp to fit it:

Then it was back to the track action, and I did 15 laps in total, and 4 with an instructor:

Usual plethora of BMW’s and Porsches on track, but I guess there were also around 8 x 197/200’s and 2 x 172/182’s driving the day also, and managed to get a picture in the car-park of an German LY also attending:

Great day in all, and well worth the money for the full Trackday; of course it was still full of plastic Stefan Bellof’s chasing their dream lap and driving like idiots.

Unfortunately saw 1 x Clio 197 broke down on the grass verge beside the track, and there were 3 crashes (One particular bad one with a Blue UK Registered Focus RS from what I heard..)

Was surprised myself to see so many Mk3's. The one broke down had dropped a valve and punctured a coolant passage he reckons. Fortunately no big bills, other than having to get the car home.

Apologies if I seemed a little impatient when I came passed you. I had had an issue with a Megane not letting me through earlier on in the day, so I must of got myself a little wound up.
