bizzare engine noise!

got a ph2 172 2002. when you push the revs up to 2500 is fine. between 2500 and 3000 there's a strange crackerling noise, when you push past 3000 it dissapears. any ideas.

exhaust heat shield?

that's what i suspected but checked as shields were fine.

engine cover loose?? mine rattled so i took that off
plus its much better with it off
and my plastics inside the boot were loose that rattled at 3000 rpm
and check heatshields all way back to backbox even though it sounds like the front
