bloody tweeters!!! :)

  172 cup TT

Right, now need to sort the tweeter part of my install out... i have a few options:

- stop the facory tweeter from working, removal / screw driver through it whatever and place new one somewhere

- or, replace with the new tweeter in same place...

Thing is, ive read on here and most people say you need to remove the dash.... and REALLY sware this is the ONLY way.. BUT there is successful thread on here which says about simply removing the cover by twisting and pulling out, and you can get to it that way... the guy seems to have done it and it worked.. but i think some tweeters probably wont fit.. but still, it didnt need taking the dash off to disconnect it! - how has anyone else fitted new tweeters to their car and how did they do it - replace in new location? replace? what, and how! :)... thanks in advance people

I have a Cup by the way.. thx

Nice

It´s not very hard too remove the dash, just take a bit of time. I have build my new Alpine tweeters in the original holes and angled them, looks very nice and the sound are 100 times better. took me a weekend because I had to cut the grilles in the dash, and had to cut it right...;)

You have too take of the A-beam covers off too pull top of the dash out and up then just follow the thred on the main site.........

bugga, not a member, need to do it now.. oh well.. another reason to send that damn membership form away :).. sod it, ill just try and pull the grills off like that other guy... as long as they dont write my car off if they break im ok :) lol..

You can remove the grills from the dash by twisting them (stick some bits of wire into the holes to help turn them) anti-clockwise about quarter of a turn and then prise them out, but there is not a lot of room to get the tweeters out.

The easiest way to fit new tweeters is to remove the dash top.

The only tricky bits in removing it are the clips either side of the centre air vents, the clips over the passenger airbag and the clip in the middle of the dash - all of these are circled in red:

Once you have removed the A-pillar trim and all the screws then you need to pull the dash cover outwards (towards the rear of the car) to release the clips shown above before lifting it up and then out of the car.

No need to remove the dash to replace the tweeters - if you push down on the tweeter covers and twist to the left, lift and you have access. Admittedly it takes a little force to get the old ones out, but only takes 1/2hr to replace both.

Mine were a straight swap, just had to take the std plugs off the wires. NB I didnt have separate crossovers or anything like that, just replacement tweeters.

best bet is to pull the top half of the dash off im afraid, yes you can twist the covers off, but i guarantee they will be the next part to rattle once you have

right... ALL done! :) - twisted grills off... yanked tweeters out... kinda did a little death dance around them too when on the floor..

New tweets are perfect diameter BUT too deep so got the electric jigsaw (yes JIGSAW) and started cutting up the inside of the hole.. very tricky as had to stand out side and look through the windscreen and a big jigsaw is hell to fit under - the slightest slip and theres a two foot gash in the dash board! lol... but no.. all worked well.. in and tweeting away like a goodun... problem is, the damn VHS tape sized crossovers!! argh...

Nice

do the tweeter grills "twist" off on my 2001 Mk2 Phase 1... was just before the newest shape came out.??

Take the dash off and put the crossovers behind the dials! No SERIOUSLY it works.

Hehe, When we fitted WoodleAdams tweeters in his 172 we took the dash off and put the crossovers either side of the passenger airbag!!!

I just hope that the gaffer tape on them doesnt work loose otherwise when he crashs the passenger is going to have a crossover impailed in the forehead!!
