i'm guessing big ends anyway.

p.s i know its a crap vid, but its dark here.

though it sounds like a top end rattle. doesn't disappear above 1500rpm so thats the dephaser out the question. no loss of power.

noise disappears if the rev's drop down to around 500rpm.

oil is good and clean. but it did stall and refused to restart until it was cold. as you can hear the starter is labouring heavily to start.

f**k me thats bad, if you caught it early you coulda got away with new shells but that sounds like regrind time, probably easier to replace the lump tho

it literally has been that bad from as soon as it started.

I've got a spare crank at a mates lock up. but it makes me wonder if its fucked the bores. it may not even be shells as its present all the time. doesnt disappear when de-accelerating... makes me wonder if a piston has started to let go.

Have you checked to see if its blown a spark plug out (common fault)?

SOunds more like that to me than a mechanical noise. Doesnt sound like bigends thats for sure.

sounds just like the one i had in

Its not mis-firing or popping and banging. and its not turnign over as fast as usual.

Will be puling it apart later.

forgot to say that it did seem like it siezed up. i got to my gf's and it wouldn't turn over until it'd cooled down for an hour then started fine.

tis possible for them to nip up on the bearings, then free off when cool like.
still dont think it sounds like big end shells from that vid though.

  f**ked ph1 172
tbh mate it doesn't sound like big ends beside it. it sounds like its coming from the bottom of the head, or the pistons wiggling up and down the bores. going to go back and pull the head off and see if theres any damage to the bores. and see if i can get away with putting in a spare crank and new bearings.

never in my ownership. its 3/4 up the dipstick when i checked it last night after the failure.

when it started i was about 6500rpm in 3rd, noticed a slight lack in power changed to 4th and then it was rattling like f**k.

it was only there on acceleration and constant speed so automatiually assumed big-ends. then when i got to my gf's(5 miles away) it stalled and wouldnt start for an hour.

any idea what it was in the end? i've got a spare head with bent valves so i could just build up that head with new valves if its that. but dont want to waste a head gasket fitting it if it is the bottom end./

Could the timing have 'slipped' hence the lack of power...... and the reason it stalled when you stopped???

A new enigne with about 40k is about £650ish, reprogramming is about £300, and labour wise its about 3 hours more work then doing a cambelt. Dont let anyone charge you over £1.2k to fix.

^no it doesn't fella, not on a direct engine swap, the engine itself isn't a computer just a lump of metal, the existing electronics system just "sees" the same as it did before (i mean that in a nice way, not taking the piss if you understand?)

  f**ked ph1 172
I can do the work myself so not worried about that.

just want to find out if its possible to fix cheaply. i've got a second car i can use, so not in a rush. if needs by i'll buy a forged bottom end(will take me a while to save up though :( )

  2005 Nissan Navara
if you can do the work yourself your onto a winner. bearings will be like £40, gasket sets £70-80, £100 for a crank re-grind, £30 to deck the block, £30 to skim the head, etc

wont be massively expensive to do a standard rebuild if its DIY.

Just make sure you check everything, clearances, everything, leave nothing to chance.

Wouldn't ever take offence, what about the imobiliser does that not need to be coded with the lump/ecu? I only think this as I was charged for this in a px engine recon last year.

no don't have to touch any of that, you just unhook the engine bay loom, pull the engine and box out, whack the new engine and box in and reconnect the loom, turn the key and you're off

Baztards!!!

Good to know, LOL.

the only way i could see that happening is if they were retards and decided to use the donor engine's ecu, but that would be a dumb thing to do as you have to unlock the ecu

was yours for a 172? or another car?

only reason I ask is 'cos for most modern diesels the injector trim does need coding to the ecu.
on petrol's however, this isnt the case, so if they charged for it they shouldnt have.

Well that's exactly what they told me, but I doubt they did. As always if they can make money by a well places lie they will!

i've started on my spare head, just fitted new stem seals, will pull my old head off and build the new one up with the valves from the old head then refit it with the old h/g just so i dont waste £50 finding out its not the head. if its fine then i'll fit new h/g and bolts.
