just bought a small tube thing and the guy said to just use a small pot of something like a jamjar

will a coke can be ok?

Something clear is best to use so you can see any air or debris in the system also allows you to see when the new fluid is coming through.

A compressor and pneumatic brake bleeder kit FTW

My compressor, loads of attachments and the kit only cost me about £120 and it's always coming in useful. Best buy for a home mechanic after the halfords 150pc socket set imo.
