Brake Light Control Switch

Hi,

I got my brake servo and master cylinder changed by a renault dealer on tuesday.
Driving home from work tonight (back shift) I noticed that my brake lights were permantly on.

When I got home I had a look and found that the brake lights were controled by a switch on the pedal. Its sort of like a plunger that contacts with a part of the brake pedal. When you dont press the pedal the plunger is pushed in, and when you press the brake pedal the plunger comes out.

I pressed the switch plunger in a bit by hand and the brake lights went off.
Can I blame renault for not setting this switch after they changed the servo/master cylinder? or would they not have touched it.

I also noticed that although the plunger of the switch seemed to be secured fine the wiring of the switch seemed a little loose, although to be fair it may have always been like this.

Considering it was dark and I didnt have a torch on me at the time I was looking at it I couldnt see if there was any adjustment in the switch.

The brake lights were permantly on because even when the brake pedal was not pressed in the part of the pedal that is supposed to press the plunger of the switch in was not pressing it in enough.

I can make a tempory fix by putting a few layers of tape on the part of the pedal that contacts the plunger in order to press it in slightly further therefore restoring normal brake light operation.

Anyone any experience in adjusting this or know if it should have been adjusted after the servo and master cylinder were changed.

Hope to hear from you soon!

I've no idea why they fiddled with the sensor there no need to on the Mk2's though the sensor is none adjustable the Mk1's have a sensor which can be adjuted Your right the only fix is a new sensor or to tape the pedal up a bit for the size.

OK.
Im gonna phone the dealer tomorrow and argue the point. I'll just tape it up for the rest of the week though since a visit to the dealers means getting up early which is hard on this shift. They probebly wont be able to fix it tomorrow on demand anyway I'll get it booked in for saturday morning if I can.

The brake light switch is self adjusting on a a ratchet type of mechanism.

If you remove the switch and push the outer part of the sleeve (which is around the plunger) back, It will release.

Then put it back in the bracket and press the pedal, that will set the adjustment again.

How do I remove the switch, or is it obvious when its daytime and I can see instead of feeling.

You will see better in daylight, it just clips in.
Use two small screwdrivers to release the clips.

I had another look today in the daylight.
I couldnt see two clips.
I couldnt even remove the switch. It looked like there was no adjustment on it whatsoever.
I had to make a fix using layers and layers of electrical tape. It seems to work fine now tho.
Looks like im going to have to get it back into the dealers to get a new switch fitted.
