Brake Problem! ABS??

  1.6 16v
Hi, Last july i had a problem with my brakes!

They were working but the brake pedal was pulsating when braking.

After lots of research i figured it out that it was the ABS sensor because the garage couldnt find any problems on the computer.

So i got them to clean the ABS sensor and it sorted the problem for 7months and then its come back now.

So i thought put a new sensor on this time and see if that helps. That was done yesterday and its doing sort of the same, not as much pulsating when braking but there seems to be somthing different going on to (More viberation i think!)

Do new ABS sensors need time to settle down??

If not what could the problembe NOW!?

Cheers Steve

Does it pulsate/vibrate all the time? Or just when braking hard or at low speed?

Have you checked the abs rotors? Sometimes they can split and cause problems, check both the driveshafts and rear drums/discs.

Wouldn't just be the greasy / slippy roads at the moment would it?

Mine did what yours did (pulsating) then about 6 months later the ABS light was permanently on. Turned out to be the driveshaft in the end apparently :)

Well its ok 0 to 30 and then up to 50 when not that much braking is going on

50+ it does it all the time. but when braking from 80 to 0 for traffic lights its doing it all the time untill i get to about 20. I have tryed re-applying the brakes and its starts again.

What would i be looking for on the driveshafts and rear drums??

Cheers for the help.

Hi mate, i remember we had a chat about the brake problems last july time.

I thought that at first but i dont beleive it is now because its dryed up here! and still doing it, just been out again.

Did they replace your driveshaft? Do you know what was causing the problem on it?

Cheers Steve

Its a metal ring with teeth that the abs sensor uses to determine if the wheel is moving/how fast. Although by the symptons you describe I dont think it is the rotors. iirc you will have to take the drum off for the rear, on the front it will be on the driveshafts.

Kool, cheers pal.

The garage said yesterday that they checked these and they were fine.

I dont get why cleaning it in july worked and a new sensor has caused more problems.

Do you think there could be a problem wiith the driveshaft? if the rings are fine??

Cheers Steve

Here are some photos of the two front wheels. The ABS sensor was replaced on the passenger front wheel.

It all looks fine to me, I thought if renault stick it on there computer they can diagnose abs faults quite easily?

Its showing nothing at all! Dont know what to do now tbh.

Where do i go from here. I have no confidence in the brakes!

Had the same problem, after numerous visits to the garage they couldnt diagnose the problem. Ended up taking this pic and going in and showing it to them and saying change that you numptys, which sorted it right out.

Cheers for the help, The rings dont look to bad on mine tho, so what would you suggest i tell the garage to do now?

Do i get them to take the driveshaft out and see if its that? Its all money tho!

The only bit on the drive shaft that can go wrong abs wise is the rings. Has it been diagnosed on the renault computer?

I havent taken it to renault because of the costs, but the place i take it has a fault finding computer that they plug into the car.

Its not found anything on it as of yet!

Would the brake pedal be pulsating for any other reason apart from an ABS issue??

Cheers Steve.

good luck steve, a stupid suggestion from me as i am no mechanic, but the discs arent warped are they?

Anyway hope it goes ok and gets fixed!

what made you change that ABS sensor before any of the others? one of the other abs sensors could be duff, check the ABS rings on all four wheel, check the gap between the ABS Poll ring and the sensor on each wheel. clean up the ABS sensors on the 2 drive shafts and the rear hub with a wire brush, and clean up the end of the sensors. make sure you have all the points of contact cleaned (ABS rings and sensors) then try switchin your new abs sensor with the other ones.

How much are these abs sensor rings?

Also what is the part number for these?

Cheers
