braodband slower than dial up - help!

  Astra SRi T
my broadband seems slow and keeps going off and on is this slow , just done a speed test and it said this

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user................. and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
45 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is .............., your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps. For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps. For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps. For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

im on 2.5mb speed btw

I take it you used the BT login (speedtest@speedtest_domain) when you used their wholesale tester?

  Astra SRi T
yea, its so annoying arghhhh, it so slow, it takes about 2 mins to refresh a page and it wont open half off the pages.

Ive got that new Bt home hub thing, how do i get my line stats?

You'll normally use an IP address to login to the router from a web browser. I know BT products used to use 192.168.1.1.

  UR 197, AB 182 FF
if you have one of those black pieces of crap routers that come with the useless onboard BT firmware, then the default IP is 192.168.254.1 ( or .254) depending on model.

You could reset the router and default it to factory settings but you would have to put your user/pass back into it, not that it would help.

You could always use ipconfig from the cmd prompt and the router will be the gateway address.

so that'll be the one that came up when i done the speed test?

Nope that's your external IP address. The IP to access the router will be with your manual/instructions.

  172 Cup
If you type "ipconfig" at the command prompt as Mike says it will show you your "Default gateway address". This is the IP you need to type into a web browser to access the router setup/status pages.

One more question.. How's your pc connected to the router? Ethernet, USB or wireless?

  Astra SRi T
got it!

192.168.1.254

Ive got my 1st pc connected via ethernet, and my 2nd pc is ethernet to, and laptop wireless. ive only been using my main pc all weekend tho

Best thing to do is try the BT speedtest on all PC's attached to the router and see if the results are consistant.

If possible (not sure if it is with BT firmware) get the line stats and post them here. Look for referances to SNR (maybe called Noise) and Attenuation with dB levels after them.

i work for an isp.

i'm assuming you are on DSL MAX ?

is your router plugged into your master BT socket? are you using any extension cables?

Im on the bt 8meg, option 3 package, but i can only get 2.5mb cause of the exchange. My router is plugged in to a extension socket, its been fine plugged in to there for ages, its just gone stupidy slow:(

Extensions/bad wiring/aluminium joints etc would not cause such low results so that's irelavant.

The fact you can only get 2500mbps isn't due to the exchange itself it's because the length of the phone line and relevant line stats. BT central will have artifically capped you at 2500mbps based on these factors.

As I said before when you get the chance check each PC and we can proceed from there.

ok, i'd strongly advise you to plug into the master socket, i'd also say that you should get a new filter as there have been thunderstorms recently and the filters may have been damaged.

the problem with the dsl max service is that speeds can downgrade on the BRAS in 75 minutes with a bad sync, but it takes 3 days for them to upgrade again.

i need to know your line stats, including current sync rate, and current line rate. also fault threshold rate would be useful too.

yeah, i mean what would i know, i only work for an isp

dsl max is more sensitive than you would ever believe.

  Fabia vRS
infact i'll even go one further and say that i'd pay money if you plugged into the master socket and didn't sync considerably higher than you do when using the extension.

Did I forget to mention I work with ISP's and have written technical training guides for several ISP support departments?

Hey what would I know? Perhaps think before you jump in feet first next time eh?

Oh and BRAS wouldn't drop as low as his speeds in a million years. But hey feel free to wade in and take over if it means that much to you...

yes it would.

if he gets a bad sync and the bt blip logic fix doesn't impliment itself.

it could be anything from a faulty line card at the exchange to a problem with his internal wiring/filters.

whatever happens, if we knew his line stats then if his line rate has dropped below his FTR then he could get a fault escalated to BT without a problem.

right, ive been looking and i dont know what to do to get my line stats?

log into your router setup page and go to the status section, should tell you in there.

whoooaaaa, GEEK alert!

this happens to me sometimes on bt and i just go to the router, disconnect my connection and reconnect and its fine again, thats what i would try before anything else.

Your downstream Attenuation is fairly (verging on very) high which would suggest a long physical line length and/or a noisy line and the SNR is just above the threshold to remain connected.

When was the last time you reset the router? Would be useful to know due the the sheer number of near end crc errors.

As for your last comment about it being bad after 6pm that's basically due to the early evening being the peak time for net usage and it's not unusual for noise margins to drop a few dB's in the early evening.

52db attenuation isn't spectacularly bad, but please i beg you plug it into the master socket and use a new filter and tell me what your sync rate is then.

besides, even a 2mb connection should see 200kb/s downloads.

Ive relaced the microfilter on all sockets with the new ones i got with this router, ive tried the master socket its still slow

you won't see a physical speed increase instantly when you plug into the master socket, i just want to know the sync speed.

it will take 3 days for your speed to rise again.
