Broadband Max......

Upgraded from 2mb, to broadband max with my ISP, claiming speeds of upto 8mb. I ordered it on 12th Jan, go live date was 19th, I am assuming the 10 day training period will have started yesterday. when should i expect increases in speed? NDO said i should get a reasonable increase as my house is practically next door to the exchange, i do know that there are other factors though that can determine the speed.

Check your main incoming phone socket, you only needs two wires connected to #2 and #5. If there are any other wires just pull them loose.

This will reduce noise on the line and increase speed.

I did this when I got Sky Max 16Mb installed, my speed went from 2mb to 10mb. Not bad as I'm 1.6km from the exchange. A new updated faceplate should improve this still.

7MAT could you explain a little more on this pulling wires out, im intersted as my connection is suffering now due to noise on line, its gone from 6.5 to 1.6 all the time now.

I recently upgraded my broadband with Virgin.net from 2mb to 'up to 8mb', a couple of days after the activation date i lost the dial tone on my telephone but my broadband was still working but slower than the 2mb i was on before.

BT found a problem with my line at the exchange and fixed that but my connection was still slower than i had before, after a bit of searching i found a later driver for the standard Thomson ST330 USB modem for 8mb lines, which also alters the USB modem transfer mode from Bulk to Isochronous and i altered the TCP/IP (RWIN) size to allow for the higher rate download with a little registry update i found.

A few tools i use to check speed and download -

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

http://www.speedtest.net/

I have found doing the tests at off peak times gives higher readings(a true measure of the potential), my connection is now equivalent to 5.5mb to 6.0mb, with a download speed of about a steady 700Kb/sec, peaking at about 1.0Mbit/sec.

Couldn't find the exact link about re-wiring you main phone socket but I think I found it on www.skyuser.co.uk - although the info on here is for Sky BB it should be good for any ADSL provider that uses BT lines and exchanges.

Open up your masker phone socket and there should be 6 terminals - hopefully you will have 3 or more with wires connected. You only need two wires connected to terminals #2 and #5. Remove all others as no longer used.

wow just undid my main phone socket faceplate, and theres a tester line in there connected to this and the connection went straight back up to 6.5!!!! its a sunday as well, so may get a higher connection during the week, pipex is always slow on weekends. this is awesome!!!

Be careful if you are going to change the BT NTE-5 MASTER socket/faceplate as i think the only people who are allowed to change it are BT engineers and it is illegal for anyone else to change it, you face suspension/termination of BT service and/or a stiff fine if you do so

The Master line box is the "demarkation" point between Your Equipment and BT's Exchange Line, so everything on your side is your problem, everything on BT's side, including the Master box itself, is BT's problem, if you're caught with some third paty NTE5 AS YOUR MASTER BOX, it's clear and obvious that you've changed it yourself.

dont think ill be chagnng it as i dont really understand what it does anyway, the forums are really confusing over at skyuser.co.uk, they say with the faceplate you dont need to use filters around the house?

at the mo ill leave the faceplate hanging with my cable connected to the inside connection. Seems fine and all phones still work fine as well.

We will see....

BT allow you to take off the lower half of the NTE-5 face plate as there is a 'test' socket to the bottom right, if you ever have problems with your phone line you are supposed to disconnect everything else and run a wired handset straight into that socket to test for a dial tone.

If you look at the lower half of the face plate you took off you will see a male socket that slides into the test socket when you refit the lower half, that carrys the signal round to the middle of the face plate where you usually insert your telephone cable/adsl filter.

What i noticed on mine was when i came to refitting the lower face plate after i had a problem with no dial tone, pushing in the lower half, it did not seem a very tight fit into the test socket and it felt like it was pushing the test socket back into the housing a little bit resulting in a poor connection as my modem adsl light was now flashing(should be solid).

After a bit of messing about with it by carefully sliding it in i managed to get a good connection, you may have a proclem with the lower half of the face plate and/or a poor connection aswell.

Look at the BT NTE-5 socket near the bottom of this page to see how they fit together and transfer the signals. - http://www.solwise.co.uk/adsl_splitters.htm

ok got a BIG problem, none of the phones around my house work now, including my sky boxes. Even when i plug it back into the normal slot nothing works, only works in the tester slot now!!!!!!!!!!!

I think when i took my faceplate off it pulled some wires out as i have a loose green wire and a loose white wire with some green marks on it.

I have 2 blue wires in 2
2 orange wires in 3
0 in 4
2 white wires with blue marks in 5

question, do the wires need to be metal to metal touching as they all seem to be coating to metal, does the signal go through the plastic coating??? if not i guess i gotta trim the ends off?

Im gonna get my arsed kicked from my old man!

They must be metal to metal, but they use a crimp so it will probably look like the insulation is still attached, but a thin metal strip which cuts a small section away from the insulation will be there..

sounds like you've broken something though. if you cant fix it you may need to get out an engineer to fix it..

ok sorted now, had to go back to 1.6 speeds as using the test port disables all the other ports around my house, they only start to work once the faceplate is put back on. So may have to invest in one of those faceplates afterall.

im moving house in a month so not too bothered about being illegal etc, new owners will have to worry about that.

edit - just ordered a faceplate roll on tues when i get 6mbps speeds again!

No its not great but a decent enough test for a before and after results to see if your tweeking is working.

I tried the test on dslzoneuk on both BT and SKY broadband this afternoon on two different computers and couldn't get it to work???

Will try it again tomorrow - see if it works then as interested in seeing the results.

it will take 3 clear days of good sync for your BRAS profile to update, then you will achieve the better speeds.

AWESOME! just removed all my filters around the house as they are not needed anymore, found out one of the phones never had a filter connected, could this have affected my line before?

yes, if you used one phone without a filter that was probably what caused your crappy sync rate.

already watched prison break s02e14 and heroes s01e12 today :D
