Broken gearbox

Hi guys, just wondering if i have a broken gearbox. My 2nd gear pops out of gear when i stast coasting! Would i need a brand new gearbox or there is just a loose cable somewhere? Cheers.

If its popping out of gear its more likely to be the syncro that a totally f**ked gearbox.

mine did that and it also crunched slightly in 2nd! after about 5 month the box died! could also be ur dogbone mount. worth checking!

sounds like the dogteeth are worn. it would need stripping and the 2nd gear/sliding hub assembly replacing. would be an idea to replace all the synchros as well whislt its stripped. have a look at the dogbone mount first as adam says(it might be split and causing the engine/gearbox assembly to move to much pulling it out of gear)

yeah i had that after 21,000 miles lasted to about 56,000 miles then went pophad no better luck since,on my 4th gearbox now(78,000miles)there sh*te!

When my engines mounts were badly worn it wouuld jump out of gear sometimes.When changed it hasent happened since,you may be lucky!

for the rebuild or the dogbone?

would be cheaper buying a second hand low miller box than having it rebuilt, and dogbone is a ten minute job if that

would be more economical to get a recon gearbox rather than stripping yours. to strip and repair yours would cost around £200+ in parts alone. you can get a renault recon box for about £450 and it would have 12 months warranty. you may find a recon box cheaper than that at a gearbox specialist.

Yikes wow that is it. Im gonna be a drug dealer coz I cant afford to keep my car. Lol only joking. Hmm might need to find a gearbox specialist. Anyone know one near Blackburn? Cheers

Easy there chaps, dont scare Mr G. I had exactlty the same problem, jumping out of second on engine breaking, and occasionally in third under heavy acceleration. Turns out it was one of the cir-clips split and broke off the lay-shaft (apparently common on the 16v engine). I had a local garage sort it out, they stripped the gearbox (manageing not to fully take it out), re-install the new part and had it all fixed in one day. The shalf (think the 2nd gear cog) was rubbing slightly on the casing, so had some burring in the box oil. Had to flush it again a few weeks later just to ensure non left. All sorted for £110.. bargin. Worth checking before you start buying complete new boxes, etc... 5000 miles on, its all still a going like a dream..
