Broken Speakers (Electricians?)

That bit of my speakers is broke. Well when I say broke, it works if I twist the wire in a certain way but it's totally given up the ghost.

My plan of attack is to cut the green thing off and replace it by splicing the wires together. Whats the green thing called and where can i get one from AND will doing this even work :o

It's just a 3.5mm audio jack. I recently tried to do the same fix, but gave up after the headphones broke for a third time. There are four wires inside the cable, all of which are pretty thin. You can either cut the jack off an old set of headphones and solder the wires together, wrapping each of the four in heatshrink, or order a new jack that you can solder everything onto, which is the easier way.
