brought car and cambelt snapped advice needed

  ibiza fr tdi hybrid
A friend of mine brought a clio 172 monaco last night and on the way home the altonator belt snapped and took the cambelt out at the same time! Only lives 25-30 mins from were he brought it so wasent far he has asked for his money back and the seller said no he is only willing to pay for the cambelt kit ect but a garage has said the engine will need a rebuild what are his rights?

Private sales are sold as seen.

The seller is being kind by offering to pay for a cambelt kit. If the buyer is not too far from a specialist a rebuild may not be to much. In reality a new used engine may be cheaper.

I would say it depends on what the deal was, if it was sold as seen? I don't think there is much you can do? especially if it was a private seller.....

Talk about bad luck....:dapprove:

This. Nothing he can do.

Take the cambelt kit money quickly, as he doesn't legally have to even offer you that.

And the aux belt it's due at 36k or 3 years.

That is very unlucky. How the fu×k did the aux belt smapping take the cambelt out ?????

The seller has no need/reason to help the buyer out but if i was him i would go halfs with him to help him out

Common problem, many owners don't get the Aux belt changed at the correct intervals, it snaps, wraps round the cambelt and takes that too.

Standard bought brought joke. Bloody belts on these cars are a menace. Put the 150 towards a second hand engine. Very bad luck

I don't understand how its a joke though? Unless its at the expense of the OP and therefore c**tish.

The cars aren't a menace, its the owners that don't service them!

Seller has been kind to offer anything essentially, but the belt kit alone wont be any use to you, as it WILL have bent the valves, and possibly if you are unlucky fractured the pistons or badly damaged the head too (although thankfully 9 out of 10 times its just the valves) depending on what RPM it went at.

Secondhand engine probably cheapest option, especially if you can fit it yourself or have a mate who can do so cheaply.

If its a 900 quid clio (well 750 now), just break it might be his best option as it will cost that much to fix it including labour realistically anyway.

The cars aren't a menace at all. It's the owners that don't understand 'replace belt after 5/3 years' that's the problem.

But the bottom pulley is so tight to the engine cover its hard to see how the aux belt would fit between

Common as anything mate, had it happen on our old PH2 172 (in that case it wasnt the belt was overdue it was that a PAS pipe leaked onto it)

Never said the cars are a menace, far from it they are great cars. Keep coming across threads about belts snapping, and yes you're right, neglect is the cause.

It's not really cuntish to the OP, just a standard CS response for posts containing the word brought instead of bought.

Shame you're so far away. I've got the bottom half of a 172 engine that needs to go (cheap, but it needs a cylinder head and a decoke).

I have been advised every 24k for aux belt for peace of mind.

I cant see the point in changing it that often TBH, if I were going to change anything about the interval it would be the time, as the usual way in which they fail is the tensioner seizes first.

Luckily I got all mine done last month, water pump & dephaser too.My auxbelt tensioner was siezed, tell tale sign was a noise when turning steering from lock to lock when stationary.Keep an ear open for this to avoid disaster.

Exactly, and the tensioner is effected by time, in fact regular use actually prevents it seizing if anything.

You can take them off and free them up and lubricate them and put them back on though, not a big drama, aux belt is pretty easy DIY, its only the cambelt that is a pain really if you have no experience of it.
