Building a PC comparable to Mac Pro.

  Mk2 Golf GTI
How much am i looking at to build a PC that rivals this Mac Pro in specs?

I want it to be quiet, run cool and be stable so dont want to skimp on components. Also, a monster, all singing-all dancing graphics card is not required as it will be used for music production, no gaming at all. Also want at least 2gb RAM.

Cheers

  ST on the way...
If you want something comparable to a Mac then don't install windows when you've finished! ;)

Vista baby! russ cheers for the link but i have no idea which components to use, lol.

Yeah but for what he needs it for you dont need to built it to the same spec. a Dualcore CPU would do fine. Xenons are server CPU's they dont need to be in an audiocreation system simple as. Most expensive bit would be the soundcard if he wants one with a decent breakout box etc Which could cost £300+.

If all he is using it for is audiowork those 2 cpus will be totally wasted.

The thing that really hogs down a music PC is the number of effects plug-ins and virtual instruments. Would it be the processor or the RAM that determines how easily it would get bogged down?

Speaking from experience in building pc's, I'd suggest you buy pre-built now.
Prices are low enough and tbh, if it buggers up you can send it back and get someon else to fix under the warranty, you don't get that with a DIY machine.

As it's already been said, you'll struggle to get a machine as the same spec as a mac for £600 - pre built or otherwise.

^ obviously not listening.

Ok for a start my friends system is used as a total audio system. Has everything connected toit hardware mixers etc. He can run everything needed on a 3200+ and 2gb of ram.

That machine with xenon processors would be absolutely wasted on something like that.

And the xenons are also slower than an AMD opteron. So something else to keep in mind considering an opteron is basically the exact same as the desktop counterparts but with a lower power consumption.

So simple dualcore cheapish one say a 4600+ at £150 or so plus £100 motherboard 2gb decent ram say £200 decent hard drive £100. And a decent sound card is dependant on what he needs and they can go into the thousands alone. Its all dependant on what you need in that case, The CPU and ram etc is not as much of an issue as you would think.

You dont need a machine with that much processing power to cope with samples. And addng lots of things will be mainly put in ram so that has more impact than the CPU.

The graphics cards wont be made use of in that mac either.
