Burning smell from engine bay...

Seems a strange one..

After a spirited drive around the Peaks yesterday the car has developed a burning smell?!? Which will appear after 5mins of driving (the car has not even warmed up yet)

It is not over heating, all coolant temps are fine

Clean and full oil

Clean air filter

but the inlet manifold/engine seems to be scorching after a drive, alot warmer when compared to 3 other 172's which had driven then same jounrey.. If that makes sense :S

There is nothing touching the exhaust manifold either

Checked most "obvious" things

But still the burning smell is there

Now I am thinking a bearing, alternator perhaps? It does give off a screech every now and again from that area?


Any suggestions

Have read on here about alternators on their way out giving off an acrid burning smell, have a sniff of that.

id deffo say alternator pal.

Screetching is usually a slipping alternator belt, so it will be the rubber belt burning a bit.
