Hi mate, plenty of info on here so probably worth doing a search.

With the Ph1's, you'll probably have to be patient, as the older these cars get, the more dogs you'll find. Personally, I'd set your mileage limit to 80,000 (10k a year is pretty reasonable) and don't let mileage dictate your purchasing habits - higher mileage could well just mean that the owner does lots of motorway miles. The number of previous owners being high is more telling IMO, but then these cars tend to do the rounds fairly frequently due to their cheap, cheerful and fun nature. Expect to find a really good condition one for £3500, and anything under £3k is usually going to be a little ropey.

These cars NEED to have had at least one cambelt change in their lives and should really be getting near a second, so if it's not had its second yet, bargain a bit.

Don't worry if they have little dings on the doors or stone chips on the front, the paint and panels are soft and flimsy. The standard Renault exhaust is also rubbish, so if it hasn't been replaced in the life of the car, expect it to need replacing soon! The best bet is to go aftermarket.

With the interior, the steering wheels always go crap so don't worry if it looks bad, and the silver grab handles on the doors also lose their lacquer and can look poor. The seats are generally pretty good, you'll find the leather starts to crack but the alcantara is pretty tough wearing. Mine had 75k on the clock and the driver's side was only just starting to bobble, the rest of the seats were perfect.

Hope this helps... :)

To be honest mate mileage is pretty irrelevant if the car has been cherished as said above there are plenty of horror stories waiting to happen with the neglected models, i own a phase one 172 and it only has 47k on it with f.s.h and its solid for the age.

I managed to get him down to £3800 (needed cambelt done) I thought it was still a bargain.

Make sure any model you go and see make sure the cambelt etc has been done.

Great car, really fast

Ads 172 knows his stuff mate...

My ph1 has a worn steering wheel, door pulls are a bit shitty looking as i've not got round to sorting them and the drivers seat has a little scracthy looking thing in it, however engine wise it runs brilliant as i've taken care of it, aftermarket exhaust etc.

Was black a rarer colour & how many 'y' platers?

What sort of mileage should it of done & cambelt change??

Not particularly rare compared to the rest, there were 934 Titanium Silver registered, followed by 117 Black. Then 116 Blue, 99 Iceberg, 60 Red and just 31 Yellow. Obviously there were also 172 'Exclusives' in Scarab Green.

Not sure how many Y plates are around, my guess would be not many at all, as the Ph2 was launched in June of '01.

Cambelt's the same as all RS', 5 years or 60k (not sure if this is actually 72k, but I've always gone by 60k), but should be earlier. I personally would try to find one 80k or under, unless it has a fantastic history and is enthusiast owned.
