Buying A Cup Racer

  1.6 Focus, 1.6 122S

Im thinking of buying an ex cup racer but dont know what i should expect to get with it and what i should look for in case of steering clear?

Should I get a service history with it? (obviously not DEaler :p but what work has been done to it when?) What races it was in?

How do I check that its all good and the engine is blueprinted? (not even knowing what that means!)

The car has seen far better days but i,m wanting to buy a project car.. any advice?

service history doesnt matter

it will have been battered about + probably crashed, even reshelled, but what do you expect, it a race car

paintwork - who cares!!!

buying a racecar is completley different to buying a road car

you should get some spares, another set of wheels/tyres included, plus a workshop manual

you basically buy with your eyes

see if you can get to drive it before you buy it too

a blue printed engine "should" have some form of seal on it somewhere

Its not drivable atm (flat tyres)

I has been in a few crashes and been repaired and i hear what your saying it is a race car. Engine bay looks clean apart from a very rusty mainfold.

I know that cuos in good running order go for about £3000 but how much should i pay for one that needs work? Are they a bottemless pit of expense if i get a bad one or are the parts used hard wearing? (would of thought they would be)

Thanks for teh advice!

theyre virtually a standard car, stipped out with fancy suspension and exhaust

cracked windscreens are normal on them (the chassis do flex, but dont be worried about it)

the roof will be kinked in places, again normal

i was offered a 1.8 16V one for £1500 (needed bodywork repairs)

Dont forget they will have been used and as Fred said probably crashed so make sure it goes and stops in a straight line. Also see if the tranmission tunnel is straight alos that the door close reasonably easyily (can point to a bent chasic).

Price will depend on spe a tunned 2.0 is more expensive than a 1.8 sealed engine.

It might be worth looking at a road going car and make it track ready hopefully there more which wont have been in serious accidents. You can pick up valvers quite cheap.

Im not 100% sure but I dont think there road legal at all so testing will be difficult unless your actually on the track or do some illegal driving. Least with a road legal car you can insure it like a car.

saner try http://www.teamthink.co.ukwww.teamthink.co.uk as they often sell ex race cars, from reading stuff about them on here they seem to have a very good reputation, they will have loads of knowledge on the cars.

ill leave michelle to comment about that

her pink car passed its MOT, all it needed was a horn

It doesnt have number plates does it?

As Fred said though let Michelle comment on team think as she bought a car from them so is better aware of what there like.

The plan was to make it road legal and take it to the ring (all cars MUST be road legal to go on track there)

so we got it through the MOT, but havent had time to register it with the DVLA etc etc
