Buying a Renault Sport Clio

  Countryman JCW
Hi,

I currently own a Clio 172, and a friend of mine having been in it wants to buy one now.... His budget isn't great so has been looking at Clio's with higher milleage on them like 80k.

Id just like to know if anyone could tell me what they are like at this end of the milleage scale i.e. if the engines begin to tire at this stage of milleage and if anyone would advise against buying one?

Any opinions or help would be awesome!

Cheers
Ross

He said he's going to spend about 2k on one, he's only going to use it as a track car...

He found one thats a fair distance away with 80k on the clock a ph1, for £1600? sounds a bit iffy to me?

My 1st PH2 172 had 100k on it, drove perfect, until someone crashed into it, current one now has 87k on it - helped by 3k in a week round Europe last month, still returns 35mpg and pull like a good un!

As long as you look after them, they'll look after you!

My bro, has just picked up a phase 1 172 with 104k on it and it seems 100% sound just make sure its got a full service history and you should be fine, it also helps if the mileage has been clocked up on motorway journeys as this causes less wear to the engine - which is the situation with my brothers and is backed up by the lack of wear on the seat bolster etc.

As long as the car has had it belts done etc, full service history and well looked after i would not worry about mileage

The engines seem to get a little bit better with the miles in my opinion. Just a shame about all of the rattles that appear over the same time... :(
Just make sure of belts, etc, etc...

My mk2 172 is now on 95k miles and going well, it pulls much better now then it did a 50K. :D

I have oil changes/ serviced every 6K... as long as you look after it make sure the oil is nice a warm before ragging it, then 80k + examples should still be fine.

Yeah should be fine with higher mileage, just make sure its had its 72k major service and cam belt change as this can cost quite a bit.

one of the members on here Ivan has a 172 x reg, 121k on the clock, and on the rolling road it put out something silly like 181bhp.

If you look after them, the high mileage engines seem pretty strong.

yep mine is a testament that older clios are just as good...i got mine in march this year for bang on 2k with 103k on the clock..had a remap through henk at fastchip, open cone filter and scorpion exhaust and put out 177.2bhp at the surrey rolling road meet...charlie who is the owner said that because of the higher mileage the engine is more loose therefore its getting its full potential..like the guys have said as long as the belts are done and it has god service history there shouldnt be a problem...buy a ph1 soon as the prices on them are starting to rise again for some strange reason

  53 Clio's & counting
same here, 121,050 miles as per this morning, and although iv not had it rolling roaded, iv had my g-tec on it loads, and average 0-60 is 6.58, and its on its original clutch still!

look after them and they will last

make sure cambelts recent, brakes have been done, exhaust is good along with nice body work and fsh and you should be fine. They are reliable (ive owned 4 and done about 60000 all in all and not had one failure except servicing items as mentioned).
