Buying an EU phone

I'm thinking of buying the Xiaomi Mi 9, it's been released globally already but only came out here this week.
For some reason it's more expensive in this country, and getting an EU model saves a few quid.

Would there be any issues with an EU phone, like with software updates and such?
Do you even get software updates if you buy a phone outright from a distributor and not a network?

I don't believe there will be any issues with the 3G/4G frequencies it supports.

I bought my phone and it came from Hong Kong.
Just needed a socket converter or just use a different plug as most are USB now, updates all work just fine, not sure if it's because it's a cheap phone or because it came from oversees but reception isn't as good as the Gf's iPhone

Some won't have 4g capabilities depending on network provider.
I looked at a few last year and that was one of the issues.
