Cadwell Race in the XR2.

Preparations for the weekend weren't great - after the rebuild, the engine refused to run last Wednesday so had to get a mate round to sort it out - got it ok, but missing a bit on tickover - to sort out on Sunday morning before qualifying.

Qualifying came round and we hadn't located the problem, so decided to run it anyway to get three laps in and allow me to race. It did pick up a bit, but was still missing until about the 4th lap when one of the carb flaps stuck open and my lowest revs were about 4000rpm - went straight on at mansfield and had a little bounce over the grass and parked it. Still good enough to put 4 cars behind me on the grid!

In the gap between sessions a couple of faulty spark plugs seemed to address the problem and the car was good to go for the race! Got a much better start than previous rounds, stuck one up the inside of a 205 to go three-abreast into Coppice, which got too much for the 205 who spun to the outside.

A few corners later I had a big spin at the top of the Gooseneck, stuffed the whole entry up and lost the back end on the way through which relegated me to last but one. Then set about catching the pack! Got past a few cars whilst the car was developing a vibration whenever I turned right. It felt a little bit like a driveshaft knocking at first, so I just pressed on. Few laps later it was starting to get really bad, so parked up in a safe place for my first DNF ever.

On towing back to the paddock at the end of the race, the front left wheel decided to finally part company with the car and found a barrier to play with whilst the recovery truck dragged me along on my brake disc for several yards before stopping. The wheel coming off stuffed the wing in too, so there's a little bit more work to do before Donington in July.

Thanks to Whiteley, Tim and John for coming down to support, take pics and even muck in when needed!

Bad luck on the wheel dude, just think you faired better off with parking it rather than hitting a 1 foot away wall at however fast.

What date is Donnington?

  Turbos.
PMSL @ the Pug spinning, fail! Are you on slicks?

Unlucky, know how you feel, also DNFd with a driveshaft problem at the weekend. It fired itself through the exhaust too...

Unlucky, I've had wheels coming loose a couple of times now - once due to failing to re-torque wheelnuts after taking wheels off after qually (d'oh!) and the second time due to the wheels having been repainted and paint being used inside the bolt holes - the bolts aren't gripping the wheel but the layer of paint so a heat cyle or two later they work loose (apologies if I'm telling you something you already know here!).

Hope the damage isn't too bad to sort out.

I just went through my normal routine of torquing up before each session - no paint on wheels or anything - I can only think either the torque wrench isn't accurate or something. Re-assessed the damage in the garage and in true 'riggy' style, the wing will form back into approximate shape to be re-used next time. The brake disc is shagged however.

Ahh Alex mate, hard luck with the wheel issue. Well done for having the sense to think "nah sod this" and park it up!
I've had wheel nuts come undone twice on trackdays and it ain't a nice thought thinking that a wheel could part company at high speed.....even worse for it to happen in the middle of a race!

Best of luck for the next one!

I'll be at Oulton for sure. Shame it's only the Fosters circuit though.

I raced at Oulton a few weeks back (with the CTCRC). We also ran on the Fosters circuit and the only explanation given as to why was lack of marshals to man the extra posts on the International loop. When we got there, there were HUNDREDS of them - never seen so many orange overalls and, whilst it's great to have them, I just wish they'd spread themselves out a bit more (I swear they were into double figures on some posts). I always make a point of giving all the marshals a thank you wave on the cool down lap and my arm was knackered by the end of it!
