Cam belt change - Glasgow Area

  RB 182 cup,astra sri
First post in a while.

I am looking at places to get a cam belt change near glasgow. The reason being i want to get an idea how much its going to cost. I am considering buying an 05 182 cup but it hasnt had the belts done and its for sale for £4200 with around 45k on the clock.

Any advice / recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

craig

Dont really know of any places in glasgow that are renaultsport specialists except maybe the dealers themselves but they will rob you blind, some over edinburgh way that i know of! Was lucky enough to be down south when needed mine done, so went to Ktec.

Maybe try knock the price down if you can mentioning that youll need to get the belts done or try get them to get it done in the price?

speak to the lads up there about the dealers! I had to advise an RTE over the phone how to sort something for a customer once!

already got the price down from 4700 to 4200 because of the belts but i am wondering whether that is still a bit over priced. i heard that there is a place in glasgow called florida motors that is either renault or french car specialists.

There must be folk on here from the Glasgow area that has had to get the belts done. Where did you get them done!?

i assume you mean £420??? is the inc vat?? that's steep for a 172 cup!!!

I think he means the car was for sale @ £4700 and hes got them down to £4200 to cover cost of belts doing

  Lionel Richie
oh right, in that case rip their arm off! £500 to do a belt on a 172cup is about £200 more than you need!

Mate its a 182 cup i am thinking of buying. the car was orginally for sale for £4700 but i got the guy to knock off £500 because the belts arent done.

i am trying to find out how much it would be to get both belts done on the car and whether £4200 is a good price for an 05 182 cup with 42k on the clock

ding, how do you fit a gearbox, what do you do with the dephaser, etc etc.

Imo Fred is worth the journey to get it done right and at a decent price. Alot of the people up here have been down to see him and he has a better reputation than the arsehole dealers we are stuck with

It's a great price.

Try and push him down to £4000 though, just because you can.

as long as its straight yes! make sure you get the full aux kit changed, £500 is more than enough

I am going to look at it tomorrow but the pics i have seen seem to show that its a decent example. i just got a price from a garage for changing both belts and water pump for 350 plus vat. the guy recommended changing the variable valve pulley as well at an additional cost of 140 but wasnt sure about that. i know it has been detailed before on other posts, but what exactly gets changed? i.e. what is the full kit?

  Clio 172mk2
the 140 is for dephaser pully basically the front cog on camshaft, might as well as if it goes after wards, u`ll have to take all belts off and start again. Oil change etc shud be done too

well he hasn't included the aux belt kit for that price and the dephaser (vvt pulley) is £166 on its own, so he might want to update his prices ;)

+ 1 I've yet to find anyone in Scotland who knows much about servicing 172/182. Dealers are a complete joke.

For info of those in Central Scotland I have just booked the car in for timing and aux belt kits with GI Motorsport in Kilmarnock, the guy has experience of working on these cars and was previously a Renault tech. The price is £432 inc vat which seems reasonable.

I'd rather take the 3 hour drive to Fred, everytime I see something posted from another garage re. a question Fred always shows them to be utter idiots forgetting this or that.

I'd trust no one else with my 1*2. Infact I even want to take my FRP to him!

If he didn't want to work on it he could say no I only work on xxx but he doesn't because it's just nuts and bolts to him at the end of the day whether it's a Lambo or a 106.

I can understand people going back to garages where they have had good service but at the end of the day its a cambelt service on a Clio and not brain surgery and I cant justify a trek for a few hundred miles to get this done. The use of special tools for this job is not only applicable to the FR4 but to loads of other engines and just like loads of other cars its a b**ch to do.

Kenny Brown motorsport in Hillington Industrial estate comes highly recommended. He used to track prepare 1*2's, so he knows a thing or two.7

He has the correct Renault tools for locking the engine, i know 3 people that have been to him with 1*2's - they have had no problems.

I recal someone on here saying they were quoted about £600 from him though.

Even with VAT being the way it is, i highly doubt it would be as much as that.

I offered to supply the cambelt and water pump to him and he said it would be £300 in labour so £600 sounds a bit much.

In that thread he says its a quote, he (Kenny Brown) told me it would be £300 labour if i supplied the parts now im unsure if you could keep the cost of parts under £300 but either way its however much it costs or new engine i suppose.

Yes an engine is expensive but I was comparing the quote I received for £432
