Cam belt change (pic)

Here's a pic of my Clio having it's cam belt changed. There was a few choice words coming from the garage big hands small space lol.

Well at least they used tipex so it will be timed up properly.

Then take it to a specialist on here and get them to check its all okay and set the timing.

They aren't exactly difficult providing you have the correct tooling and procedures.

There not much different to your average zetec se due to non of the pulleys being keyed.

Nothing is difficult about it, you just need to know of the correct way to do it and the correct set of tools.

Genuine, I've no idea

All the pulleys are floating and it requires 3 specialist tools to correctly lock and remove the pulleys. The correct procedure is needed to make sure the belt tension is correct. Due to the lack of keys the torque setting is very important especially for the crank as the oil pump is secured to the crank with the crank bolt.

Its not hard to do but like everything there is a process and some specialist tools.

Im the same as you, I don't know anything about engines I am looking at that picture with a blank face.
Just cos Im on here doesn't mean I know anything about engines I just like my car as it is lol

If I'm not mistaken I think it's the fact they just use a paintpen to line it all up rather the " correct tools " to lock all in the first place.

They over £100, no bad if it's your trade but certainly not worth it for DIY at home every 4 years.

Yeah but you need cam end seals again as they brake on removal, but it will cost so always best to pay for it to be done properly.

Unlike my old Astra where I held it all together with cable ties, I learn that from a master tech at VX Heathrow! Bodgers everywhere.

Ok

When I did the timing chain on the wife's micra all you do is remove the chain set the three marks on the sprockets to the right position then put the New chain on, job done

There are no marks on the clio. The 3 tools come to about £150.

CHances are they haven't renewed the aux belt kit, so it'll spit that into the cambelt fairly soon.

Well there is a world of information at his fingers tips on this issue right here alone, it's discussed every week so hard to miss. there are no savings to be had going to the likes of Dan, BTM, Rentech etc, maybe £50 tops, unless his mate is the guy who thinks they don't ever need changing from a few months back?

Having read through all your threads i'm a little dissapointed in all your reactions. The person doing my car is a extremly competant mechanic who in fact rally's these cars. The pic was taken before the old cam belt was removed. In fact he does have the correct tools!!

Fair enough though aslong as you're confident it has been done right thats all that matters.
