Can I start engine with no alternator belt?

  Clio
Hi,
My alternator pulley went on a 2005 1.4 automatic Clio dynamique and the belt is off now.
Can I start the engine and drive it 300 yards to the garage to get it fixed. Does the alternator/aux drive belt only turn the alternator and therefore if the battery is charged it will do no harm to drive the car a short distance without the belt - in other words is the belt only there for battery charging and the engine will be fine, the only problem would be the battery won't be charging? Thanks.

Send it.

Note that on many car the aux belt drives the water pump, power steering pump and AC. The only important thing from that list is the water pump. 300 yards, don't idle the car, don't let it overheat and you will be fine.
