Cam belt change (pic)

Saying about 'choice words' being said and 'big hands small space' would suggest someone was struggling to me.

Having read through all your threads i'm a little dissapointed in all your reactions. The person doing my car is a extremly competant mechanic who in fact rally's these cars. The pic was taken before the old cam belt was removed. In fact he does have the correct tools!!

Did you assume we were all phsycic then, as the picture tells a very different story to what you've said above.

Welcome to the forum sunnysideup.

When you've been on the forum for a while you'll understand why you got the responses you did and you'll also realise this forum is an invaluable resource you'll turn to time and time again.

Enjoy

Thanks Tim :). I have already found out plenty of advise on here. But I don't think i shall be posting a thread in quite while. The response of this thread had deeply upset me. Have a good day :)

That'll have incorrect timing too. Enjoy you new Clio 145 :)

I have absolutely no idea if my 172 has correct or incorrect timing and whether its down on power or not (sometimes I think it is) but if it was incorrect (was changed back in 2011 by prev owner) would this impact the reliability of the cambelt itself.

They MUST replace the Aux belt, NOT just the belt but the complete kit which from Renault is about £50.

If the aux belt fails then it will take the cam belt out which will in turn smash the engine to bits.

Air con does not need to be touched, i hope they are not charging you for a re gas?

Remove the bumper and yes it is tight but that's how its done.

Good luck.

Every thing is being done and all genuine parts from Renault. I'm not worrying about re gas my husband will do it for free. perks of being married to a manager at a ATS.

Good stuff, people only go on as they hate seeing members getting belts done by garages that don't know about these french tin boxes.

There next post are normally "had my belts done by Joe blogs garage now my car don't run" we see it time and time again on here.

Yes, some comments are a little bit harsh in there words but trust me we do care.

Sadly, being a specialist I've seen FAR too many **** ups with cambelts. I have probably put more right that have been done by previous garages than I have actually changed.

Those white marks are VERY clean if they are from the last time it was done not now! (ie 5 years or 72K miles ago)

And if he has the correct tools there is NO value to him adding white marks to it.

Welcome to the forum, and I hope the cambelt job turns out better than it looks like it might, tbh you DONT need to have the proper tools to do the job properly, you can use a drill bit to look the crank pin and you can test the timing with a bit of flat bar with a bit cut out of it, but it does make it a lot easier to do if you have the correct tools as you'll end up having 20 goes at it before you get it right if you havent got them.

Wash your mouth out....genuine tools ONLY can do the job right. Most on here are incapable of thinking how they could be done any other way.

I did the tippex thing first time I done one, just a habit for reference from doing loads of other belts.

Ive done floating pulley setups on other cars (mondeo etc) using home made tools, so long as you fully understand what needs to be line up with what else its perfectly possible to do, its not rocket science, so long as you turn the engine over a few times then when you pin the crank the two slots in the gearbox end of the cam are in line, then its timed correctly.

But that said, MOST people get it wrong, as presumably they either dont turn it over and check it, or just dont care about getting it quite right.

Ive got the proper tools anyway now for a clio, just makes it easier than without them, but it is possible to do it wrong with the correct tools, and possible to do it right without them.

The correct knowledge is more important than the correct tools.
