Cam belt change.

  182
Have a one owner 04 182, just coming up to 5 years old. It has done 20,000 miles and I wonder whether it is really necessary to have the cam belt changed. The car is serviced, with synthetic oil change every year.I am retired and a fairly careful driver.

Any comments would be very much appreciated.

Doesn't matter how well the car is serviced, it isn't going the change the properties of a fabric reinforced rubber belt, namely how quickly it degrades due to ambient conditions and number of heat cylcles.

Get it changed - with the full cam belt kit (i.e. both rollers and tensioners) by someone who knows what they are doing.

Cheers

Agreed ^^^

better safe than sorry, money well spent now rather then paying out for an engine rebuild later.

With those miles i bet its a minter:D

An absolutle must mate, its better to have the belt change even if it isnt anywhere near the mileage limitation!

Think of the cambelt like an elastic band wrapped round a cup and left outside all year, its open to the elements and can become brittle and break.

It could very well last another 50,000 miles but then it could snap tomorrow morning.

Plenty of reputible garages out there that will happily do it

A guy i work with has a 04 182 with 23k miles on and his is just about the become 5 years old, he's not had the aux or cambelt done yet and isn't going to until he's done another 6k miles as that is when Renault have told him his next service is due (he's one of these people who think they're the experts so i'll go by what they say)
It's annoying as i've really tried to explain why it needs to be changed, especially the aux belts. Oh well, i have warned him and we'll wait and see what happens! Fingers crossed the belts will last the duration for him.
I've had the Auxiliary belts and pulleys tensioners done at 3 years 19k miles and i'll be having the cambelt done at 4 years which will be about 30k miles i'd imagine. As has been said, better safe than sorry and there are plenty of local specialists about that offer a full belt change in the region of £4-500
