Hi,

I know renault recommend 5years or 72k but in reality when is it best to change on these engines ?

Mine is an '05 with 53k

I had mine done at 3yrs/34k as it worked out the same price to get it all done with a specialist than just the aux belt at a Renault dealer.

Follow those guidelines, if it hasn't been done do it as soon as! And take it to a proper specialist.

It's rubber.

Get it changed, cheaper than a new engine

its not the belt that fails, its the plastic upper idler in 99% of cases

the thing people forget is this

your car is a 2005 REGISTERED vehicle, but could've been built in 2003, so could infact have a 7year old cambelt on there

Is there a quick way i can check the idler as its going to be 3weeks or so before i can get the car into a garage due to needing it for work etc

Theres not a way to check the idler as far as im aware, your basically sitting on a ticking time bomb

It's which ever comes first not whichever takes the longest.

In Renaults eyes The belts will last up to 72k, but if you don't rack up many miles then you need to swap it out after 5 years.

Your 05 plate is now coming up to 6 years even with the low mileage. Plus that is not including your pre-registration age!

Im getting it changed anyway but In my opinion it is over exagerated with the age thing of the timing belt I believe (5years anyway) as it is not open to any ingress of oil/dirt or any other contaminats to degrade the belt, yes they do stretch and crack overtime but that would be excelerated by sunlight etc which it does not recieve.

Thats my thoughts anyway but better safe than sorry !

^have you ever measured the temps the cambelt and idlers etc get upto? (we're talking over 100degC) its heat cycles that kill them

lol because i used to drive with my bonnet off all the time, and the engine mount off as well so the sun could hit the belt!

They are exaggerated because in reality not everybody is going to swap them on the dot. So they need a safe margin. But as you don't know what the margin is so you're playing a lottery as to how long it lasts!

As every belt is different some will be lucky and last 10 years, others will go before the recommended time but the service interval will be gauged off of an average failure rate.

I'd swap it ASAP!!

Personally, i've always had my 1*2 belts done at 60k, or 4 years old ... barring the Trophy, which (without me realising) went from 72k to 174k (over 4 years) without a cambelt change

Except rubber exhaust hangers they degrade after 5 minutes.

I had mine done as soon as I got the car. 36k and 5 years from registered (although probably 6 years from manufacture).

Done mine at 34K (3.5 years from reg), and it'll be done again at 70K.

These are the only guys I have ever used for my cars and to be honest you can't fault them.
