cam belt...timing.

  CLIO 172 CUP....
right he we go..

when i first got the 172 cup it needed a cam belt change as it had hit the 72k. so it got done at a garage called (x tream motors) near were i live as thay said it wasnt a problom to do so thay change it....now the other day i posted a thread about not having the 5krpm kick any more and most peaple on here have said timing is more than likly out abit. so after reading post about the right tools have to be used for the job, and if ther not timing will be out...now after reading some post on here about the cams have to be locked and by doing this the two round caps have to be removed to be able to lock them up. so i whent and had a look to see if thay had as i would of been able to tell as new ones would of been replace but i dont think the caps have even be removed by the looks of it. so i whent down to the garage to speak to this guy who change the belt and water pump and said to him that i bleave my timing is out as i dont think you used the right tools as the caps dont even look as thay have been removed. so he said the belt was all done properly..(i.e crank was looked with the pin and all the rest of it)..any way he has told me if i take the cup back down ther he will line the crank up and lock it with the pin then take the two caps off and show me it all timed up properly in front of me witch he is (100%) sure it is..and if it not then he is will to re-time it along with a new belt and that...

so wot im askig is peaple dose now about how these cam belt changes are done if so can thay please tell me wot im looking out for..(i.e like wot gets locked up first cams or crank and also were abouts dose the pin that locks the crank go on the engine..

thanks guys for any info u have to give cheers...

so wot im asking is when i go ther tomorrow to have this check out wot

upper belt cover should be removed also as the timing can be correct, but the belt tension incorrect, i've seen that LOADS!

  CLIO 172 CUP....
fred@btm...sorry mate im all new to all this. wot do you meen buy upper belt cover should be removed wot will he do once this is removed. so will he have to lock the crank up and then remove the caps to see or an think..

just need to no as im going ther tomorrow and dont wont to go ther not noing wot the hell he on about...

cheers....

  A special one.
I think what Fred is saying if the cam belt is set to tight then it will pull the cams out of timing as it will be "over adjusted" i have just done my belts on my ph1 172 using the Renault tools.

Lock the crank with the pin, remove the plugs and insert the cam locking tool. Then check the marks on the tensioner line up - you need to remove the top cover of the cam belt to do the latter.

i dont think the sequence matters too much, me and mate did belt kit on mine, there is a flattish piece of metal which is inserted into the two cams under the black covers to hold them straight, the locking pin goes in the front of the engine, kind of down to the left of the dipstick, the belt cover on the left hand side is removed and if there is timing marks (there werent on mine) they will line up.

as long as he locked the cams and crank before removing the belt it should be fine.

tension wise - its an auto tensioner on the cam belt, i cant remember but i think that is behind the lower half of the belt cover and the enngine mount has to be removed to get that off, that should be fine unless the part is faulty or he hasnt properly fitted the pin in the back to the slot on the engine (which acts to centre the spring and allow the tensioner to tension) its unlikely he has this wrong but i suppose you could insist it be checked?

what is possible is that the car is just running smoother/placebo effect? i thought after mine was done for some reason it didnt seem to kick as hard but i roughly checked my 0-60 and had a wee drag with another cup and was very slightly faster, which if the timing was out wouldnt have been (unless his was too lmao!)

to put your mind at rest you could get a local member to race you to the speed limit and see if your car is slower?
