cam dephaser?

  Monaco Blue 172
anybody else had this kind of fault? its a shocker. going to cost nigh-on £500 to fix :dapprove: i always wondered if the engine was just a bit too rattly! any ideas what would cause this? bad driving or just a dodgy component...?

so it seems a bent radiator is the least of my worries! :quiet:

just me then. boy i must be unlucky! had the quote thru from rentech its bang on 600

apparently this is quite a common fault on meganes? am kinda pissed off that it wasnt diagnosed and fixed by the previous owner under warranty. i didnt even know there was anything wrong, its always sounded the same since i bought it :S

whats the worst that could happen if i just continue to ignore it ;)

and there was me thinking i'd got a good-un! well i suppose one big expensive problem is preferable to lots of annoying smaller problems... lol

yahoo! could u fit it in less than 5 hours? and how much life has it got left? i'm guessing these things arent supposed to routinely wear out and i've just been unlucky with mine...?

sounds good. could u jot down a quote for me? the cambelt was gonna be due next summer anyway so that cost is unavoidable. my initial thought was to try and get it done under my auto protect warranty but its quite likely they wont cover it - i gotta call them tmrw and see what the score is

Go 2nd hand on the de-phaser if you cant get it on warranty.
So far I have changed one clio de-phaser and 2 espace de-phasers, they dont fail that often but they sound horrid.
As to what the cause is its internal failure, and its a know fault as Renault have a tech note on it.

Never done one on a Clio, but do about 2/3 a week on Meganes/Scenics, easily done can do them in 1 & 1/2 hours without rushing.

appreciate that dude...

well just spoke to warranty ppl and unsurprisingly they're not keen to cough up... so i'm looking to get this done as cheaply as possible!!!

was advised that this could be the problem on mine... would it drink more oil if it was on its way out?

Had mine replaced under warrenty after 17,000 miles, was very worried at the time as it sounded like my old Vauxhall XE lump when it ran out of oil (pierced oil filter) i.e. like it was gonna blow up. Still ran fine though.

well mine did use a bit of oil over the first 12k that i've owned it, had to top it up once during that period (from the bottom of the scale thingy). i thought that was normal tho as the book says its supposed to use some oil... :S

Some engine do burn oil some don't theres no hard and fast rules.

i'll not worry about that then...

now that i know what it looks like, can someone tell me what this bit actually does?

It advanaces to cam to ensrre better clyinder filling and so the engine can meke power over 65.k without a shape drop off in power.

Biggest thing is its something for the PR men to play with.
