Cambelt and service

Car  172 Cup
Just wondering if theres anywhere Essex that will do a full service and cambelt without paying the ridiculous costs I've been quoted so far;

South Hills garage - £850
John Tinham - £980
Ren-o-Tec - £734

Whilst they are reputable garages and do seem to know their stuff I find their prices a little on the steep side. I appreciate it's a pretty labour intensive but these just seem silly (one wanted to charge £68 each just for spark plugs!)

I'm still hoping to get it down closer to £500, but would want someone who knows the car and isn't just a monkey with a spanner.

are they having a laugh?

its a £300 job on a cup with no AC!!! I'll chuck in a free holiday for £800 LOL!

Not for service as well Fred ;) I thought that when I first read it!

What service is it mate? Ie, how many miles has your car done?

I'd highly recommend rentech in Portsmouth. Their prices are very reasonable and great service. Worth the journey.

Jms aren't very far from you either ....

service and cambelt is £400 inc vat from me on a 172 CUP

then you have the option of dephaser, plugs, box oil, brake fluid etc etc

ie NOT £800!

Sounds like a much better price. Sorry for being thick but what's a dephaser?

Will need plugs and other fluids. The cars got 50k but at 7 years I want it to have a good going over... Didn't get much service history with it after the initial 3 years so not sure how much it's been abused.

How much for the whole lot?

That's bloody cheap fred! How much for a 72k service?

I'm sure rentech's price was about £550 for belt and service??

no £800 is a rip off! its a 172 CUP WITH NO AC

£300 - cambelt and aux
£166 - dephaser
£100 - 12K service
£45 - plugs
£40 - box oil
£40 - coolant
£40 - brake fluid (inc bleed)

£731 for EVERYTHING

Just spoken to Renotec and their price didn't include the dephaser, they're going to get back to me and let me know how this affects the price - the recptionist thinks about £140 for the part plus an extra hours labour (but she's going to get back to me once confirmed).

She did mention that it wasn't their usual practice to replace these unless it's knackered but I see most people on here seem to think it's worth getting done.

Does any body have any experience of renotec - I know it's probably in the garage section but I don't have access at the moment . Although I will try to get full membership at some point soon :rasp:
They advertise themselves as Renault specialist so I'm hoping they know their stuff but you never know!

Thanks everyone.

Cheers Fred,

I'll mention that when (if) they call back! Starting to wonder what there is to do in Birmingham for a day with no car!

if they're doing the timing procedure in the way "us specialists" do it (ie the correct way) then the dephaser has to be slackened off anyway, so to change it you just spin the bolt out, swap the pulley and spin it back in

i don't charge labour for that!

I'm still waiting for JMS to get back to me (although he may have done but I can't check my personal emails at work - although they haven't blocked the forum!)

If the price and quality of the service are good I have no objection to traveling, although admittedly closer to home would be nice.

Are rentech the guys in portsmouth? I'd completely forgotten about them - but as above would be as far (if not further) than Birmingham.

Just heard back from renotec and they want nearly £700 for just the cambelt/aux belt and dephaser - would then need the service etc on top of that.

unfortunately I only had a voicemail message from them so couldn't query the extra hours labour for 30secs work!

I think they should make an official Cambelt thread thqt can answer everyone's questions. There is always posts on this.

do one the pair of you, i've just stopped him being ripped off, and suggested both JMS and Rentech, toys + pram, put them back in

Sorry, didn't know that asking for prices in the forum was a sore spot!

Thanks to all of you...been a great help and wherever I end up going at least it'll be a good price and good service.
