Cambelt change

  Monaco Clio 172
Ive done loads of searching on here bout doing the cambelt on the 172. why can t it be done without the timing tool.i use a universal twin cam locking tool which locks the sprockets. Ive done plenty of twin cam belts and cant see how it can be different from others. is it a must to release both cam gear nuts. Cant i just lock the cam with a pin, slide my locking tool in the cam gears, remove tentioner then remove belt.

There is 3 bits to the kit which can only be bought from Renault, 1 part locks the crank the 2nd part sets the cams from the gearbox side of the head in the right position and the 3rd locks the cam sprockets so that the nuts can be un-done.

All 3 sprockets "free wheel" cams and crank shaft so once un done there is no marks and they are not "keyed" If you dont undo the cam sprockets when you fit the belt and tenision it up it will pull the cams out of timing.

I have just bought the tools to do mine and after talking to Fred @ BTM this i belive is what happens if the right tools are not used.

ive found some timing tools on the net but they only got the tdc pin and the tool to lock the cams from the gearbox end. would these be ok not being genuine renault. Then just get the gear end locking tool from renault.
