Cambelt - Cost (172 mk1)

  Opel Astra Caravan 1.8

Hi!
Soon time for "cambelt-operation" on my 172 mk1 (60.000km is not really coming up yet, but better safe then sorry haha)

Anyone made the change (at a dealer) on the 172 mk1? Total cost?
Estimated time: 5.2h according to data spread sheet I got hold of.

I understand the labour bit .... tho Im sure a top expert like Mike could do it in less time ;) ... but what the heck do you get in a Cambelt Kit to justify it costing £147+ ?? Its only a big elastic band

  172 cup,s2 rs turbo

you get:-

1,cambelt

2,cambelt tensioner

3,cambelt idler pulley

its the labour that really bumps up the price. 5.2 hrs @ £55>£70 per hour dependant on dealer.

I rang a couple of Renault dealers recently to assess servicing costs and was told by one that the 72k service was the big one that included the cam belt change - £839!!

Why on Earth does it take over 5 hours to change a cam belt? Id have thought you could strip the whole engine in that time!

Its a long job to do you have to remove the engine mount on that side to do it.

The 2.0 is a big engine not much space in there to make it easy to repair it.

Wouldnt be a Renault if it toook an hour to do it.

Anything over £600 is a total ripoff in my view.

jus how many belts are there in the 172? Two, timing belt and auxillary belt?
Just the two yep the timming belt is hidden behind a protective cover and only does the cam timming.

The AUX belt does everthing else.

Both should be changed at the 72k service.

Yep good price that.

Being that its 5hrs labour and say £150 for the kit then there earning £30/hr which is reasonable.
