cambelt due, will it be ok to drive for a bit ?

  MK3 GTI golf 16v
ok, been 5 years since cambelt was last change. was done halfway through 2006

i need to do a fairly large trip this weekend, will the car be alright for bit ? its due to be done in the next 2 weeks or so. i only just got the car, really dont want the cambelt to go just before its due to get changed.

am i being over cautious ? cars done 90K, was changed at about 55K/60K i think off the top of my head

Its a daft question mate.

If we say no, you will still chance it.

If we say yes, you'll go.

My advice... get it done!... mine went the week i was getting quotes to get it replaced. Actually it went 10 mins after I tried calling 519 lol :(

Also its impossible to tell you whether its going to be OK... it will just go without much notice.

And if it does go.... you will be paying soooo much money and time lost with your car.

However its going to be pretty difficult to get done before the weekend so good luck... thing is, it may go in 10 miles or 10000 miles who knows.

I only had mine changed in january, about 3 years later then the service schedule recommends. It could of snapped the day after I had it changed or it could of gone on for years. The point is you just never know.

if you can go without it then book it in asap and use something else

if not then chance it, ive seen some go years over and be fine but some under and have snapped

  172 track thingy
There was a williams that went 12 years on a single belt also heard of 172 belts goin at 40K (3 years old) it's a service part yes but they can fail any time between services just a matter of luck tbh :S (usuallly due to a pulley failure from what I have seen heard though :S)

I did a williams that had never had a belt in 15 years

bit stiff. Idlers were noisy as hell. He thought it was fine as it'd only done 60k. MatBrown went to buy it, then went home empty handed and left him my number

Mines never been changed on the 182 and doing 100 miles a day at the minute, although personally id just take the car on the trip it will be at the back of your mind the whole journey.
I need to do a trip to scotland this month too so im in the same boat but its going as i dont have another car.
When i get a reasnonable quote it will be done, not the £1200 from renault i was quoted, id rather let it snap and buy another car for that money.

Have a look at the specialists on here, it's nowhere near £1200!

mine was on 58k and an 03 plate, guy said it had been done but took it to birchdown for peace of mind anyway and they were 98% sure it hadnt.

i was driving it around normally for a couple of weeks prior but it was ALWAYS in the back of my head

i like to compare it to crossing a road, you can keep crossing it day after day for years but it only takes one day of not looking / caring and you are crossing it infront of a bus
