Cambelt help...

Hi All,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, new to this forum and just getting used to it.

So had my 172 a few months now and as it is 8 years old and no sign of it ever having a cambelt changed, my father and I are going to attempt to change it tomorrow....

My mate has another 172 and did the belt a few weeks back and recommended i look at the how to guides on here... ive found one by delcbr but couldnt find any others using the search function. My mate said there is another one, by RStuning i think he said... i would ask him but he is unfortunately away and i only have the time off work to do it this week.

if anyone has used another guide that they found useful please let me know.

Thanks for all your help!

Do you have all the renault tools?

And i think I've only seen one guide, wouldn't have thought RSTuning would do one as it could lose them business (unless they are hoping people mess up and then pay even more for them to fix it :rasp:)

yeah my mate that did his the other week has lent me them, the proper genuine renault ones too as he did originally buy the aftermarket ones and bent them straight away haha!

hmmm... i thought he said by RStuning, i may have to try and get in touch with him see if it was defo that haha!

maybe i will just have to hope this guide is good enough...

thanks for the reply!

Good on you for having a crack mate, just follow the guide and use the tools correctly and you will be fine.

This will end badly.

Did you never learn at school if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything... your post is a complete waste of every ones time, and stop being a keyboard warrior and actually give some helpful advice if you have any.

Scott, iv got the guide ill nip round later with it.

Ok.

Good luck :)

the gates kit comes with one that's reasonably easy to follow, however it doesn't mention using the pulley locking too. Make sure you do :)

Ok.

Good luck :)

well i love proving people wrong and you sir are a prime example of a person to be proved wrong.. we did it today with no problems and fired up first time and is timed up correctly..

before you start thinking your all big and clever behind your keyboard a cambelt can be done easily on the front drive.

Started at 0945 had an hour for dinner ( thanks to the grandparents) and had all the tools back away by 1830 this eve. touch wood everything is running right just need some petrol to take it for a good drive!

Thanks to the father and grandfather for their help. Thanks to Narf for lending me the tools and coming to help put her back together.

Cheers for those who actually wanted me to succeed...just shows you just need that bit of confidence to give it a go!!! Lowlife...well enough has been said already.

did you use the puelly tool?

fred, yeah used the pulley tool, which is a con by renault as you have to buy the ever so slightly longer cog to fit over the exhaust cam pulley,

we then rotated it 5 times, which takes AAGES! but its worth doing to get the tension spread out.

I thought you only have to use the pulley tool if you are taking the cam pulleys off the cams? aslong as you use the horse shoe shaped tool and the crank pin?

and well done for managing it :)

hey well done to you, im in the same situation as mine needs doing too, wish i could have a crack myself but just not confident enough to have a go, do alot of miles in the car so it has to be right, well done again as you have obviously saved yourself some money there.

No its good that he's felt confident enough to do it and as he's obviously taken his time to do it right I to give a well deserved "Well done"... its not as hard a job as the document would have you believe is it and that's not a bad timescale for your first attempt. The main things any DIYer needs to be aware of when having a go at this is the importance of using the correct tooling and how essential it is to replace specific nuts, bolts and angle torque them back up. Ignore this partof the document at your own peril.

I thought you only have to use the pulley tool if you are taking the cam pulleys off the cams? aslong as you use the horse shoe shaped tool and the crank pin?

Nope, to do the job properly you must use this everytime as you need to slacken the pulleys to equalise the belt tension and allow it to 'space' the sprockets accordingly for hte new belt. If you don't the belt will space itself to get rid of the slack which in turn advances the timing angle... this is why most garages seem to fudge it up as they follow illegal cracks of AutoData which tells them that's how its done.

Thanks again guys! My gdad used to be a mechanic and my father isn't stupid and to be honest it was knownig narf had done it not long ago and I could ring him if I got stuck!

Renault tools are essential like you say, also expensive but a must!

And yeah needed to use the pully tool so the when you crack the nuts to release the cams you don't put all the pressur through them and bugger them up! I think that's what narf said anyway haha!

Only thing that I'm annoyed at is forgot to take progress pictures haha! Just two new tyres and a cv joint to go haha!!

Cheers again for the support guys, no doubt I will be calling on everyone's expertise again soon!

Its not, but i would go as far to say 90% of work i've seen done by "normal" garages or people are wrong, its easy to do (with experience) but also VERY easy to f**k up

as long as you have a mechanical mind and use the tools and rotate the engine on slack pulleys i HONESTLY dont see the big thing about it but its down to your mechanical mind i guess

cambelts are a big taboo because unlike a wheel bearing being pressed in if you f**k that up there is a chance you need a new engine so people are too scared to try it ( understandable too)

with the tools i fail to see how anyone could get it wrong if they payed attention

Indeed...

I think most of the cambelt problems are caused by people who just rush in to the job unprepared, not those who make the effort to come on here, read, and learn how to do it properly before starting.

The cambelt thread which did annoy me was the one where an admin or mod asked two traders if they could correct the cambelt guide, because these traders knew there were a couple of inaccuracies in it, and they refused, basically admitting they'd like people to screw up so they could charge to fix. That's not in the spirit of a club IMO and is bad form. I certainly wouldn't ever take my car to either of them after reading that. Unless they had a change of heart and did the right thing by helping update the guide, and then all would be forgiven, of course.

Fred anything can be fucked up but aslong as you lock the engine TDC, turn the belt on slackened pulleys to even the tension onthe belt all over I honestly fail to see how it can go wrong with that done, if housing use all the tools or spree the tension it won't work same way as if you just cut the old belt off and slide another one on the timing will be out

Main issue is garages timing it up like a zetec engine or the older Renault engine though icant see a main dealer doing that if im honest as I work at a ford maindealer and every job gets a "how to" guide and technical bulletins on the job card

s**t mechanics with always do s**t jobs how ever
