Cambelt Issues

  Black ff172
When I bought my 172 about a week ago the dealer changed the cam and aux belts for me. He gave me the bill for the parts (for the service history) but there's only two belts on it, nothing else.

Should the idlers and tensioners also be changed at the same time and any advice on what to do about it would be appreciated?!
(has anyone else had the same problem)?

I had the EXACT same problem when I bought my last 172. I asked them to change the cambelt and everything associated, but they just changed the belt (and put it on wrong, timed it wrong etc).

Yes, the tensioner and pulleys need to be changed!!

I ended up taking my car to a specialist and then taking the car dealer to court to get the money back, which I did.

Okay so I need to ask them to take the car back in fit the tensioners and pulleys. Now, the fact that they have not done this in the first place raises questions about the quality of the work on the timing belt. I trusted them because they had quite a few performance cars in stock so I assumed they knew what they were doing.

xzibit, I assume you only found out that it was a bad job when you took it to the specialist place? Did you go through the small claims court to get your money back?

I found out that they had only fitted a belt, as parts and labour for the cambelt change on the reciept was about £140. So I new something was wrong. So I phoned them, and they confirmed that they had only changed the belt, and that they saw no reason for the tensioner and pulleys to be changed.

Even I knew with my limited knowledge that they should be, and told them I wanted them changed too, but they refused. So I took it to the specialist to have the whole job done properly, and it was then it was discovered that the belt was put on wrong, and they had timed it up by tipex and the plugs for the locking tools hadn't even been removed.

So, yeah, I took them to the small claims after asking them for the money 3 times. I think they have either gone out of business now, or changed their name lol.

Edit: They've changed their trading name, just looked. MTC Direct now lol.
