Cambelt on 172-Has it been done?!

  RB 182
Hi guys,
Would really appreciate some advice...
Bought my 2002 172 2 months ago, its on 42k.
Its obviously 5 years old and i just checked the paperwork to check if the cambelt has been changed.

I have a recipt from a renault specialist for £409 to replace aux belt, refit coolant pump, water pump, alt. belt etc. Is this the cambelt change? it was done just under a year ago.

Does the above service sound like a camelt change, and if so, are there any things missing that i should get done as its 5 years old?

Thanks alot!!
Jack

No, just sounds like the AUX belt has been changed. It would say timing belt or cam belt if it had been I'd imagine. Plus I think it's about £700-£800 for the job at Renault.

Well the water pump has been removed/refitted so the cambelt SHOULD have been changed, whether it was or not I don't know.

Renault didn't do a cam belt change and aux belt at that price I know.

If they did ask them why they wanted £500 off me

Nope its works off the AUX belt on the 172/182 engine so need to touch the cambelt.

Ah I see, thats good if the aux belt breaks and you don't notice until its too late. Won't have been changed then by the look of it then.

  Car SOLD :-(
Sounds just like the aux belt to me.

I got the water pump done at the same time as the cam belt (just to be safe), and got told they weren't linked

Cheers for all your replies guys, sounds like the aux belt and cam belt are seperate, As the car is 5 years and one month old, surely it could go at any point... Is there any way of telling if its on the way out?

I havent got the money to do it yet, so should i just not drive it???

Cheers

You need to chnage the AUX belt when your doing the cambelt.

It can go yep.

No way of telling realy.

IMO yes don't use it unless you realy can afford the best price of £1k minimum for a new engine.

A guy on pistonheads who has a 172 suggested this place at what seems like a very good price... Ever heard of them or their reputation???

"Ive just got a quote from www.nationalvehicleservicing.com for my cambelt. They want £256 for it, and they will come out to my work and do it. I am very tempted, as I cannot afford the figures other garages are quoting me. Plus, all his work in guaranteed....if that counts for anything, as it wouldnt help me much if my engine went bang and he has gone bust!"

Cheers

i had mine done at renault recently but only because i had a relative so didnt pay labour and got it for 390 with original quote being around 650. they say about needing a speacial tool but anyone can get it.

For that price foregt it they won't be using a proper Renault kit as that lone £140 they'll just be replacming the belt alone which means the tensions will need chnaging soon afterwards so you'll have to pay full the normal price.

Think of it like this its 4 hours if your working quick but listed as 5.1hour work so at £256 is it likly to be a proper job with a £140 Renault officail cambelt kit.

One problme owning a small car with a big engine and a hot hatch is bills like this have to be taken into account when buying the car.

That sounds an excellent price because the cambelt 'kit' is around £135 and having had mine done a couple of months ago (age not mileage) the quoted 5.1hrs is about the time it took to do it. My (good independent) garage already had the tools and got them from one of their suppliers!

It's a 5.1 hour job  (less than 30 mins for a Saxo)
It took my mechanic about 1.5 hours of dismantling before he even could see the belt! (At the time I posted a pic of the front of my car - in pieces)

Bits used for the job:
A "Timing Belt Kit" - the parts are

R7701476675 Kit Distribution £123.59 (inc VAT)
R7700106271 Core Plug £7.26 (inc VAT)
R7700274026 Plug £3.20 (Inc VAT)

(Two seals are needed for the back of camshafts because
the originals have to be removed to get tool in) (?)

£134.05 total from the Renault dealer

Do not use anyone other than Renault, or a Renault specialist. When I bought my car, the independant dealer I bought it off, agreed to get the cam belt changed. They changed the belt only, and didn't do it right. I had to get it done again. I'm now chasing them through the courts to get my money back.

I got mine done at a local garage who specialise in timing belts. They done it in around 5hrs but at a much reduced labour rate. Cost me £300 with warrantee/guarentee on the belt/work.

Had no issues since and done 7K
