*Cambelt question*

  BMW M5 & E36
Evening,

My cambelt is well overdue now. Car is a 2001 with 51k on the clock, so should have been done a year ago in theory.

A friend of mines dad used to be a mechanic for Renault and has offered to do this for me. My mate/his son has a 52 reg laguna with 146k on the clock (aswell as an elise) and his old man has done all the work on that for him since ~100k.

I'm almost certainly going to take him up on it, as I think he's after roughly £100 plus the cost of the belt/tensioner kit. This is way less than some prices I have read on here.

Are there any disadvantages to going down this route? Apart from not having an official stamp in the service book, will all be good if I get the receipt off him for the belt kit?

My car isn't due a service at the moment (apart from the belt!), but what else would be worth doing at the same time?

They also said not to bother doing the aux belt as it only runs the air con/alternator (?) and no damage would be done should this snap. True?

Any pointers appreciated, and I realise I should have had it done before now!

Cheers,
Chris

its quite an expensive job, needs the same locking tools using as on the F4R (172)

if he's doing the cambelt, the auxbelt has to come off anyway

The £100 labour he's after is good going then, assuming it's a good job? I assume he has, or can get hold of the locking tools.

Are aux belts expensive? Makes sense to change it if it has to come off anyway. Is it tensioners with that aswell or just the belt itself?

Thanks for the help Fred, appreciated!

Do you know the prices of the full cambelt kit with pulleys/tensioners, and the aux belt kit then please?

Or point me towards where I might find out?! Cheers

Cambelt kit is £110. Aux belt kit is £45. Well thats what I payed last week when I did mine. That'll give you the cambelt, idler and tensioner and the aux belt, idler and tensioner.
