Cambelt should I change?

Car is a 55 plate 182

My cambelt is due, through being 5 years in may of this year. The car's done about 30k on the belt, and it was done properly by a specialist.

Would you change it early? No dephaser noise, aux belt done on chec. Just wondered whether I should get it done early as a precaution?

Your not getting it done 'early' if it is due though...

They say 5 years or 72k iirc which ever comes first.

I would get it done personally, others will say you will be fine

That is completely down to you imo

If it is due may, I would see no reason to wait couple months, but if for peace of mind then get it done earlier.

Yeah, just wondered general consensus on the matter really.

The car hasn't done many miles and everything us running sweet as a nut

I just wondered whether it would be wise to change or leave it. I'll happily leave it if it ain't gonna snap on me haha XD

I would like to think with the rule being 5 years or 72k that it wouldn't but no guarantee I guess, you should be fine though and I would just replace come may

I ran mine for 6 years I think. I think, and no doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong, but mileage is probably a bigger cause of failure than time.

Constant Start/stop journeys, bouncing off the limiter regularly, traffic light grand prix, track days etc would cause concern for me over a cambelts life but if driven normally then the normal service interval should be totally fine.

My works vans 1.6 HDI engine was on 135,000miles on its original cambelt doing multi drop because of my tight arsed boss. Admittedly it only had 75PS to deal with but decent enough torque.

You never can tell.

I'd wait, if your'e doing it 6 months early then next time you'll think, "my old one only lasted 4.5 years?! Maybe I should change this early to be safe" and end up doing 4.

Luck of the draw with belts in some cases. Some have had them snap early and some sell cars with them massively overdue, mine is due soon based on mileage but I am looking to get it done as soon as possible

Do you think you'll actually own the car in 5 years time?
If not, then does it matter if you lose 5 months of cambelt life? I'd rather change a few months early than have it snap at 5years, 1day and have to suck up the cost of a new head/engine.

Equally the cambelt may never, ever, EVER break. Ever.
But hey, OP's car. Might even be sold or totalled by May.

They also spent millions on developing the car for a degree of reliability and good handling.

I think i'm gonna wait. the car lives a steady life, does few miles and zero track days etc. I will be getting waterpump done too and everything else. I probably will keep it for a long time. I love the car! Just statistically, do they snap with age i mean, it is 4.5 years ish like so surely it'll be fine?

It's a rubber belt, not a stopwatch, so it won't know it's 'alright' for another 5 months.

You'll get belts that go before the 5 years and you'll get cars that will surpass that and last much longer. All you can do is try and follow/beat the interval and hope for the best to be honest.

there isn't a countdown timer on a cambelt. They recommend 5 years but that doesn't mean to say when you get to the day of 5 years its going to snap lol.
if you have the cash, get it done now. Why wait to see if it snaps for the sake of 5 months?
would rather pay the £5-600 now than have the engine shafted and have to fork out on more problems.

by the way, i bought the mrs a honda crv 5 years ago to use down at the stables.
its on 175k now and never had a cambelt. I want it to go so I can burn the stinking thing and get a pickup. She loves it though.

edit: She also aims for potholes, puddles and is her daily.

I had mine done on 49k (last month) as there was no record of it being done by previous owner so it was a good 9 years. So don't worry yourself to much
